Louis Rees-Zammit, once pursuing an NFL career, has made a significant return to rugby, joining Bristol Bears in the summer. This Saturday, he will take the pitch at the Allianz Stadium as Wales strives for their first Six Nations victory in south-west London since 2012, playing in a new role as a fullback.
The Challenge of Recent Defeats and the Path Forward
Rees-Zammit reflected on Wales’ tough loss to England at the Principality Stadium in their last encounter, describing it as difficult to watch. The match underscored the urgency for Wales to develop quickly as they prepare for the 2027 Rugby World Cup. With new head coach Steve Tandy leading the team, there is a fresh sense of opportunity and growth within the squad.
“It wasn’t a great watch, especially against England and losing in that manner,”
Rees-Zammit admitted, emphasizing the need for rapid improvement. He further stressed,
“We’ve got to continue to work hard and try and accelerate this process as quick as possible.”
Highlighting the talent present in the team, he explained,
“We’ve got some real quality in our team, you’ve just got to bring the best out of each and every player.”
With Tandy’s coaching approach bringing fresh ideas, the squad feels reinvigorated.
“When you get new coaching staff and different ideas, it feels like everyone freshens up and starts from scratch,”
said Rees-Zammit, adding,
“In parts, we put in some good performances in the autumn, it’s just about doing it consistently for a full 80 minutes.”
Rees-Zammit’s Adaptation to the Fullback Role
Considerable attention has been given to where Rees-Zammit fits best in Wales’ lineup, with fullback emerging as the likely position for him under Tandy’s direction. This mirrors his recent performances for Bristol Bears in the Gallagher Premiership, where he has consistently worn the number 15 jersey. He last played fullback internationally during the 2023 match against France.

Expressing enthusiasm for his role, Rees-Zammit said,
“I love it. It allows me to get more touches on the ball in open field, it suits my game. I much prefer it.”
He noted the flexibility his role offers, sharing,
“I’ve played 15 in the past for Wales, but I think now I’m kind of seen as a 15 that can play on the wing.”
The style of play at Bristol Bears perfectly complements his strengths. He explained,
“It just brings something different, and the way Bristol play is absolutely perfect for me.”
He added,
“I’ve got the licence to not do what I want, but when I’ve got the ball back there, I have to make a decision and back myself.”
A Renewed Welsh Team Ready to Build Momentum
With the Six Nations tournament underway and the Rugby World Cup approaching, Rees-Zammit and the Welsh squad are motivated to transform past struggles into future success. The combination of fresh coaching leadership from Steve Tandy and Rees-Zammit’s dynamic play at fullback signals a promising chapter for Wales rugby as they seek consistent performances and hard-earned victories on the international stage.
