Alex Highsmith’s Bold Mission to Transform Three Communities

Alex Highsmith, known for his role with the Pittsburgh Steelers, has long viewed football as only a part of his life’s purpose. Beyond the game, he is deeply committed to making a positive difference in the communities that shaped him, focusing on meaningful outreach in Wilmington, Charlotte, and Pittsburgh.

Highsmith shared,

“Obviously, I want to be the best player I can be,”

and added,

“I’ll go out there and make plays every single week. But really, when you’re making an impact in the community where you are, that’s what it’s about.”

Roots and Personal Connections Drive His Community Efforts

Born in Wilmington, North Carolina, and having grown as both an athlete and individual in Charlotte with the 49ers, Highsmith holds each city close to his heart. Pittsburgh has also become home, creating a trio of cities that inspire his outreach initiatives.

He explained,

“Wilmington is where I was born, so I want to give back to where I was raised,”

before emphasizing,

“Charlotte means a lot to me and my wife. We met there, I played there for five years. And now Pittsburgh is home. All three of these cities hold a special place in my heart, and I wanted to be able to impact each one of them in some way. That’s really our mission.”

Establishing Foundations and Expanding Support for Youth

In pursuit of his mission, Highsmith founded the Alex Highsmith Family Foundation, which channels efforts into education, sports, and mentorship programs aimed at uplifting young people. His initiatives include youth football camps, coat drives, and scholarships aimed at opening doors for those who may face challenges in their futures.

This year, the foundation expanded its reach by launching a new scholarship program, awarding financial support to students, including those attending his alma mater, UNC Charlotte.

Reflecting on his work, Highsmith expressed,

“The greatest joy is seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces and knowing you’re making an impact. That’s what it’s all about.”

Recognition, Personal Stories, and Future Honors

Highsmith’s contributions have been formally recognized this season as he received the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Walter Payton Man of the Year Club Award, a prestigious honor highlighting his excellence on and off the field.

Despite this accolade, Highsmith emphasizes that his motivation comes from direct engagement, particularly conversations with young people.

“What means the most is when you’re actually talking with the kids and having intentional conversations,”

he noted.

“I get to share my story with them my walk-on story. I always wanted this, but I didn’t really get looked at much coming out of high school. At the end of the day, I just worked hard. I worked my butt off.”

The official recognition for the Walter Payton Man of the Year will take place on Thursday, February 5th at the NFL Awards ceremony.
