Detroit Lions Promote Steve Oliver as New Tight Ends Coach

The Detroit Lions have elevated Steve Oliver to the position of tight ends coach, filling the vacancy from within their current staff. Oliver, who has contributed to the team since 2021 under head coach Dan Campbell, steps into this new role as the Lions prepare for the upcoming season.

Steve Oliver Steps Up After Years with Lions Coaching Ranks

Oliver’s tenure with the Lions began alongside Dan Campbell’s arrival, initially as an offensive quality control coach before moving up to assistant offensive line coach for the past three years. NFL Network confirmed his recent promotion to tight ends coach, marking a natural progression in his Lions coaching career.

Previously, the team’s tight ends were guided by Tyler Roehl, who departed after just one season to become the offensive coordinator at Iowa State. Oliver’s background includes playing college football at the University of San Diego, where he overlapped with Lions offensive line coach Hank Fraley in 2012, and coaching various roles at the University of Idaho following his playing days.

Oliver’s Influence on Offense and Player Development

Known for his behind-the-scenes contributions, Oliver has been recognized by former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and quarterback J.T. Barrett as a creative force in adjusting plays and offering innovative ideas. Offensive tackle Giovanni Manu praised Oliver’s commitment to mentoring younger players by dedicating time before and after practice.

Current Tight End Roster and Injury Updates

The tight end group currently includes Sam LaPorta and Brock Wright, with Zach Horton and Thomas Gordon signed to futures contracts. Several free agents, including Shane Zylstra, Anthony Firkser, and Giovanni Ricci, will face offseason decisions regarding their status with the team.

Both LaPorta and Wright ended the season on injured reserve. Wright suffered a trachea injury that sidelined him for the latter part of the season, while LaPorta underwent back surgery. Although LaPorta’s timetable remains uncertain, the Lions and the young star are optimistic about his availability for training camp. LaPorta has quickly emerged as a leading pass-catching tight end in the league.

The 24-year-old tight end is entering the final year of his rookie deal, having recorded 40 receptions for 489 yards and three touchdowns in nine games this past season. His first two seasons featured even higher production, surpassing 60 catches, 725 yards, and seven touchdowns each year.

Broader Coaching Staff Developments in Detroit

Oliver’s promotion is the latest shift within the Lions’ coaching ranks. The team recently hired Drew Petzing as offensive coordinator after parting ways with John Morton. Additionally, former New York Giants interim head coach Mike Kafka has joined the offensive coaching staff, further strengthening the Lions’ coaching depth as they seek growth and success.
