Matt Ryan Clarifies Michael Penix Jr. Status Amid QB Questions

Atlanta Falcons President of Football Matt Ryan provided insight into the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Michael Penix Jr.’s role as the team’s starting quarterback in 2026. During the introductory press conference for new head coach Ian Cunningham, Ryan was questioned about Penix’s position on the roster moving forward, highlighting the broader discussions happening within the organization.

Ryan emphasized the limitations of his authority regarding team decisions, stating that neither he nor Cunningham hold the head coach role, and thus cannot definitively answer if Penix will start next season. He highlighted the complexity involved in roster evaluations and future planning.

“Neither of us are the head coach of the football team, so we can’t answer your question on that,”

Ryan said.

“I think as we start to get into this process and dive deeper into the roster — how it currently stands, where it’s going in the future — I think those are conversations that’ll be a part of it.”

Ryan also spoke about Penix’s rehab progress, expressing optimism about the quarterback’s recovery from injury and underlining his significance on the team, but making it clear that final roster decisions involve extensive dialogue across multiple areas.

“Quarterback’s obviously very important, and we’re excited about Mike and what he’s doing with his rehab. I’ve been up at the facility the last three weeks, and Michael’s been in there attacking that and he’s in a good space right now, so we’re excited about where he is at. But certainly, a lot of discussions for us about the entire roster.”

Matt Ryan’s Support for Michael Penix Jr. Amid Role Uncertainty

In a follow-up conversation with CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, Ryan clarified his earlier remarks to express strong personal confidence in Penix’s talents and recovery efforts. He praised Penix’s throwing abilities and his performance in rehabilitation, underscoring his belief in Penix as a player.

“I’m high on Michael Penix. I have been for a long time,”

Ryan stated.

“His ability to throw the football, his ability to layer the football, to drive it to all different parts of the field. I think Mike’s awesome. I think he’s done a great job with his rehab.”

Ryan made clear the boundaries of his role, noting that decisions regarding starters fall solely on the head coach, Kevin. He emphasized his respect for Kevin’s responsibility and decision-making authority concerning the quarterback position.

“What I’m making clear is I’m not the head coach of the football team. And I know what my role is and what my role is not. Kevin’s responsibility is to be the head coach of the football team and he’s going to let you know who our starters are and who our starters are not. It’s not my place to go in there.”

Reviewing Penix’s recent performance, the quarterback completed 60.1% of his passes last season, throwing for 1,982 yards with nine touchdowns and three interceptions in nine games. The Falcons compiled a 3-6 record in games he started. Over his two-year tenure in Atlanta, Penix holds a 4-8 record as a starter, with 2,757 yards passing, 12 touchdowns, and six interceptions at a 59.6 percent completion rate.

Michael Penix Jr. Reflects on Overcoming Pressure

Following Ryan’s remarks, Penix addressed public speculation about his future and shared a personal message on Instagram focusing on resilience and persistence amid adversity. His post revealed his mindset dealing with pressure both on and off the field.

“As a man, you carry a lot of ‘pressure’ each and every day,”

Penix wrote.

“Pressure to provide for your family, pressure to succeed in everything you do in life, pressure of letting everybody around you down. But one thing I never did and never will do is fold in the face of it.”

He added a call to remain steadfast despite challenges, acknowledging his need for opportunity rather than external validation in his “Year 2” as a Falcon.

“Wherever you at right now in my story, STAY THERE!”

Penix said.

“I never needed motivation or a pat on the back! All I ever needed was an opportunity and as long as I got breath, I got that! The turtle race continues… Year 2.”

Penix is currently undergoing recovery from surgery to repair a partially torn left ACL, an injury sustained last November during a Week 11 game against the Carolina Panthers when he was sacked in the third quarter. His rehabilitation progress is closely monitored by Falcons leadership as the team plans for the coming seasons.

Implications for the Falcons’ Quarterback Situation

The ambiguity around Michael Penix Jr.’s starting role reflects the cautious and thorough approach the Falcons are taking with their roster management under new leadership. With Ryan stepping back from decision-making on starting positions, the responsibility now rests with head coach Kevin, indicating a commitment to evaluating all options before firming up the quarterback lineup.

As Penix continues recovering and demonstrating determination publicly, his performance and health trajectory will likely influence the Falcons’ quarterback strategy in 2026. The team’s focus on rehab and competition highlights the critical nature of this position for their future success. Fans and analysts will be watching closely as new coaching philosophies and player readiness converge in the upcoming preseason and beyond.
