Louis Rees-Zammit Sends Defiant Message Ahead of Six Nations

Louis Rees-Zammit, the Bristol Bears winger and Wales international, is preparing to rejoin the Wales rugby team for their Six Nations fixture against England this Saturday at Twickenham. Named at full-back by Wales head coach Steve Tandy, the 25-year-old is eager to make a strong impact following a period away from professional rugby to pursue a career in American football.

Returning to Rugby After Pursuing an NFL Ambition

After stepping away from rugby in January 2024, Rees-Zammit explored a professional path in the NFL, joining training squads for the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars, though he did not appear in any competitive games. He made his comeback to rugby with Bristol in August 2025, returning more than eighteen months after his departure. Since rejoining the sport, Rees-Zammit has highlighted the significant differences between playing rugby and American football.

“I prefer watching it than I did playing it. It’s so different to rugby,”

Rees-Zammit remarked.

“To be able to get my hands on the ball and create something out of nothing … that’s my ability. You can’t really do that in American football.”

Experience and Determination to Revive Wales’ Form

Rees-Zammit brings valuable experience to the team, having scored 16 tries in 35 caps and previously contributing across three Six Nations tournaments, including Wales’ championship win in 2021. Following a difficult period for Wales, including a heavy 73-0 defeat to South Africa in the recent Autumn Internationals, Rees-Zammit insists the squad will respond with pride and stronger performances.

“Even when times are tough you want to play your best when it’s Wales v England,”

he told the Guardian.

“It’s one of those games you can always get up for. We haven’t really given our fans much over the past few years.”

“We want them to see an identity in the way we play. Then I think results will come off the back of it. We’ve got good players and a good coaching staff in now. It’s just about putting it all together.”

Facing Criticism and Embracing the Journey

During his hiatus from rugby, Rees-Zammit observed Wales’ performances remotely while building experience in the United States. His bold decision to switch sports generated significant attention beyond the rugby community. Despite some negative feedback from fans critical of his code switch, Rees-Zammit remains proud of his attempt and the lessons learned.

“I haven’t really had anything from opposition players but you obviously get it from fans,”

he said.

“Then again I was getting it from fans before I left!”

He elaborated,

“People trying to call you a failure because you tried a different sport. Just trying to put you down really. Even when they’re trying to be offensive I find it quite funny. The fact is I went over and gave it a go. I’ve had a mad experience, met some amazing people and learned so much.”

“You’ve got to be brave to back yourself and go and do something you love. I always loved watching American football but it didn’t work out.”

Expectations for Wales in the Upcoming Six Nations

Wales faces a critical moment during this year’s Six Nations as they aim to rebuild and regain momentum under head coach Steve Tandy. With Rees-Zammit’s return and his blend of rugby skill and determination, the team hopes to offer Wales supporters a more confident and recognizable style of play. The Six Nations tournament runs from February 5 to March 14, with each match carrying significant weight for team morale and standings.

Rees-Zammit’s presence provides both a psychological and tactical boost as Wales looks to overcome recent struggles, including heavy losses and inconsistent results. His blend of experience, leadership, and resilience is expected to positively impact the squad’s performance and encourage fans hopeful for a resurgence.
