Harrison Phillips Blasts Jets’ Culture as “Cancerous” Legacy

Defensive tackle Harrison Phillips, who joined the New York Jets in an August trade, openly criticized the team’s culture following a disappointing 3-14 season under new head coach Aaron Glenn. Phillips emphasized that the struggles aren’t solely the result of recent coaching changes but stem from a deeply ingrained environment that Glenn inherited. Highlighting the importance of team cohesion, Phillips insisted that a connected group is more valuable than a merely talented roster.

Doing it with people that you care about, it helps correlate to winning games,

Phillips said during an interview with Roundtable Sports.

If I had a connected football team, I’d take that over a talented football team that wasn’t connected. I think AG inherited a very cancerous, truculent group. Top to bottom.

Feeling the Weight of a Losing Tradition

Phillips acknowledged that the problems within the Jets aren’t due to individuals but rather the established losing mentality that permeates the organization. Speaking to Brian Costello of the New York Post, he described the familiar, frustrating vibe that repeatedly resurfaced throughout the season. This repeated disappointment, Phillips warned, fosters a toxic mindset detrimental to any chance of improvement.

It always felt like it was the ‘same old Jets.’ That’s the phrase, I think someone said that,

Phillips stated.

I think the narrative of if you get into the mindset that it’s the same old Jets, that’s a cancerous thought, a very cancerous idea to be a part of. That’s a cancerous thought to have.

Hopeful Signs for the Future Despite Current Struggles

Despite frustrations with the existing culture, Phillips was optimistic about the team’s trajectory going into the 2026 season. He applauded Aaron Glenn’s perseverance and the recent coaching staff changes, pointing to them as crucial steps to reversing the franchise’s downward slide. According to Phillips, these adjustments could help shift the Jets away from their prolonged pattern of underachievement.
