“Before the season, my wife said, ‘Try Julian.’ [I said] I don’t know if he’s ready for that. He’s only six.”

“His first game, he had like three carries, 320 yards. It was just nuts.”
Developing into a Top Prospect Despite Skepticism
As Julian progressed, skepticism continued to shadow him. In little league tackle football, one coach hesitated to draft him due to his inexperience, but another coach took a chance on him, leading to a season with just one loss. “Notre Dame is too big for you.”
Nevertheless, his college career was distinguished: he ended as a consensus All-American, finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, and set the school record for pass breakups with 44 in 38 games. DT Love reflected on his son’s mindset, saying,
“The more you challenge him, the more you say he can’t do something, the more he wants to do it. He’s always been that way.”

“You came by our practice, and everybody swarmed you, and you spoke to us [when] we were little kids. I was like, oh my gosh, that’s crazy. That’s Walter Payton’s son.”
