The Chicago Bears have chosen Press Taylor as their new offensive coordinator, filling a key coaching vacancy ahead of the upcoming season. This move comes after the Bears lost Declan Doyle, who departed to join the Baltimore Ravens. Head coach Matt Eberflus did not have to search far, promoting Taylor from within the existing staff to take over the offense’s leadership.
Taylor’s Coaching Background and Previous Roles
Press Taylor served as the Jacksonville Jaguars’ offensive coordinator from 2022 to 2024 before joining the Bears after Doug Pederson was fired in Jacksonville. During his time with the Jaguars, Taylor’s performance as playcaller drew mixed reactions. In 2023, the Jaguars ranked 13th in both scoring and yards, but declined to 25th in scoring and 26th in yards during the following year. Despite this uneven record, Taylor was not expected to be the primary playcaller for Chicago.
Last season, Taylor contributed as the Bears’ passing game coordinator, playing an integral role in organizing Head Coach Matt Eberflus’s offensive strategy. Under his guidance, quarterback Caleb Williams set a new franchise record for single-season passing yards, highlighting the impact of the Bears’ passing attack.
Efforts to Fill Coaching Staff Gaps
Before promoting Taylor, the Bears explored external candidates for the offensive coordinator position, including requests for interviews with Arizona Cardinals pass game specialist Connor Senger and Cincinnati Bengals wide receivers coach Troy Walters. Walters declined to pursue the role. Now, with Taylor ascending to offensive coordinator, Chicago faces the challenge of filling his former position as passing game coordinator.
Additionally, the Bears must address the open assistant general manager role as the organization seeks stability across its leadership. While experience in the NFL was a priority for the offensive coordinator position, the passing game coordinator role may allow the Bears to expand their search criteria.
Implications for the Bears’ Future Offense
Promoting Press Taylor signals the Bears’ preference for continuity in their offensive coaching staff during a period of transition. As the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator, Taylor will be tasked with improving consistency in playcalling and maximizing the talent of young QB Caleb Williams. With this new leadership structure, the Bears aim to build momentum and develop a strong offensive identity moving forward.
