Damar Hamlin’s Collapse Sparks Nationwide CPR Awareness Push

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin teamed up with the American Heart Association during Red Heart Awareness Day last week in Los Angeles to highlight the life-saving importance of CPR. His experience three years ago, when a hit on the football field caused his heart to stop, continues to motivate efforts to improve emergency response training nationwide.

Reflecting on his incident, Hamlin emphasized the helplessness felt when someone suffers a cardiac emergency without immediate help available, expressing concern for others who might face similar moments without knowing what to do.

Inspiration Drawn from Hamlin’s Story Leads to Broader CPR Education

Professional soccer player Savy King, who joined Angel City FC last year, shared how watching Hamlin’s collapse inspired her to learn CPR. Unexpectedly, only months later during a game in May, King suffered sudden cardiac arrest herself and required emergency CPR to survive.

The survival of both Hamlin and King underscores how crucial prompt CPR is in cases of cardiac arrest outside hospitals, a condition affecting roughly 350,000 people annually, according to Nancy Brown, CEO of the American Heart Association. She emphasized that those impacted are everyday individuals in communities, including family members and coworkers.

Sports Leagues Emphasize Emergency Preparedness Following Cardiac Incidents

Hamlin’s case spurred the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) to enhance its emergency protocols. The league now mandates cardiac arrest response plans during sporting events, a policy that has also influenced statewide regulations to protect athletes. Hamlin stressed the importance of safeguarding young athletes worldwide from sudden cardiac death, one of the leading causes of fatalities in youth sports.

Brown confirmed that all players, coaches, and staff involved with the NWSL will receive CPR training, reinforcing that widespread knowledge of lifesaving techniques is essential in sports environments.

Continued Advocacy Seeks to Empower the Public Through CPR Skills

Working alongside the American Heart Association, both Hamlin and King actively promote hands-on CPR training to the general public. Hamlin likened the ability to perform CPR to possessing a superpower, highlighting the unpredictable moments when anyone may be called upon to save a life.

Traveling regularly to raise awareness, Hamlin supports the association’s mission, while King represents the NWSL’s groundbreaking initiative to prioritize cardiac safety in women’s sports.
