Calvin Austin III openly addressed the potential for his role to change with the Steelers, acknowledging that the team’s direction may no longer include him.
“Pittsburgh, just being real, they may not want me, or they may have a different vision. And that’s why I say at the end of the day, it’s just a straight business decision,”
Austin said on 92.9FM ESPN’s J&J Show.
With Mike Tomlin’s resignation, the usual exit meetings that offer players clarity about their futures were less informative this year. The franchise was still finalizing decisions when Austin faced these discussions.
“Obviously Coach T. did step down. Whether I stay or leave, it’s gonna be a new situation regardless,”
Austin remarked.
“Even if I stay, we have a whole new staff so it’s definitely something I’m excited about and been praying over.”
Career Challenges and Unfulfilled Potential Shape Austin’s Outlook
After missing his rookie season due to a foot injury, Austin worked to establish himself as a key offensive weapon by his third NFL year. Though he appeared ready to have a breakout season in 2025, a subsequent injury sidelined him for three games, curtailing progress. These setbacks have left Austin pondering whether his stalled development stems from Pittsburgh’s circumstances or if he has reached his career’s peak as he enters his fifth year.
The impending changes extend beyond himself, as the Steelers’ new coaching staff means Austin will be adapting to fresh leadership no matter where he ends up next season.
Affection for Pittsburgh Remains Strong as Future Decisions Loom
Despite the uncertainties, Austin expressed a deep connection to the city and its fans.
“One thing is for sure: I love Pittsburgh—the fans, the people, the city—I truly love it,”
he said.
“And so I would definitely want to continue to make that home.”
Like many first-time free agents, he faces conflicting advice from different sources. While his agent will focus on securing the best contract, Austin might consider signing a one-year deal with a high-powered offense to maximize future earnings.
“At first, I was a little bit like, ‘Oh, it’s free, you’re a free agent. You’re not assigned to a team.’ So it can kind of be overwhelming if you allow it,”
he noted.
“This is a blessing wherever I go or whatever happens. I’m definitely excited about it.”

Nearly the entire Steelers coaching staff was replaced after Tomlin’s departure, dissolving many of Austin’s past connections within the organization. Some of his closest friends, including fellow Memphis alum Kenneth Gainwell, are also free agents, intensifying the uncertainty surrounding the team environment.
Another critical factor for Austin is the status of quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The pair began developing chemistry late in the season before the Steelers’ playoff exit in the Wild Card Round. Rodgers’ future remains uncertain, though signals have leaned toward a return.
“I feel like that plays a factor,”
Austin commented regarding Rodgers’ future.
“Everything’s gonna play a factor. I have to think about everything. You don’t wanna make decisions and be like, ‘Man, yeah, I really didn’t consider that.’”
