On Monday at Disneyland, Darnold and teammate Kenneth Walker III joined ESPN’s SportsCenter desk. During the broadcast, anchor Kevin Negandhi brought up a list Darnold created at age 14, outlining his long-term aspirations. The list included goals like attending Southern California and, notably, a wish to be an ESPN sportscaster.
Negandhi highlighted the list, saying,
“Sam, I go back to you in ninth grade; that list, I’m not sure if your audience knows. This list. You had a list, and you wrote down five long-term goals at the age of 14. No. 1 was go to Southern California. No. 5 was just to be nice to people. No. 2 was to be a sportscaster on ESPN! So, when are you going to come over here? When are you going to take our job?”
Anchors Who Inspired Darnold’s Early Aspirations
Darnold shared how his admiration for ESPN anchors shaped his childhood interests.
“I grew up idolizing anchors, to be honest,”
he explained.
“Because I watched SportsCenter every single day, every night before I went to bed. So, I idolized guys like Neil Everett, Stan Verrett, Kenny Mayne. Like, all those guys. They kind of were the reason that I fell in love with sports. Yourself, Kevin. Yeah, I think that’s kind of where that came from.”
Future Opportunities Beyond the NFL Field
Now 28 years old, Darnold is expected to continue his NFL career for some time. However, when he eventually decides to retire from playing professional football, his longstanding ESPN aspiration may come into focus. With his passion and football expertise, he is well positioned to transition into television, potentially taking on a role as an NFL analyst or even pursuing a more traditional anchor position like the SportsCenter personalities he admired growing up.
