David Montgomery’s Lions Future: Gibbs Speaks Out on Return

Questions have emerged regarding the future of Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery after General Manager Brad Holmes’s recent end-of-season press conference and Montgomery’s reduced playing time late in the season. Fellow Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs expressed a clear desire to have Montgomery remain with the team, emphasizing his importance to the squad, but made it clear he would support whatever decision Montgomery makes for himself and his family.

“Of course I want David back. The whole team would want David back, but it’s ultimately up to him. He’s going to do what’s best for him and his family and whatever he decides to do I’m going to support 100%. But of course we want him back, though,”

Leadership Perspectives on Team Decisions and Player Evaluations

Meanwhile, Packers President and CEO Ed Policy reflected on the importance of making decisions with a calm, analytical approach beyond emotional reactions to specific games, especially playoff matchups. He emphasized the need for long-term planning to sustain competitiveness and build consistent championship chances rather than reacting impulsively.

“Football is an emotional game, and I understand the high emotions that go into a playoff game against our longest-held rival,”

Policy stated.

“However, in my seat, you must rise above emotions and analyze an entire body of work objectively to make a long-term decision that puts the team in the best position to compete for Super Bowls year in and year out. That’s the process I went through following our season. Candidly, over the years, I’ve grown to appreciate ownership groups that built dynasties through level-headed, steadfast continuity in lieu of emotional chaos.”

Packers’ Player Contracts and Injury Updates

Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst addressed the challenges faced by cornerbacks Nate Hobbs and Aaron Banks, both recently signed to long-term contracts but who struggled through the 2025 season due to injuries. Gutekunst highlighted Banks’s recovery from multiple injuries and his improved performance toward the end of the campaign.

“Some of the (injuries) he went through were unexpected, but I really thought he played well towards the end of the season once he got healthy,”

Gutekunst said, as reported by PackersWire.

Regarding Hobbs’s knee issues, Gutekunst expressed cautious optimism to see how he performs in the upcoming season.

“It didn’t work out this year, but we’ll see how it goes in the next year,”

Gutekunst noted.

He also indicated that both players are expected to remain with the team in 2026, given their existing contracts and the current status of team decisions.

“With losing five games in a row, I don’t think we’ve made any decisions on anybody yet, but those guys are under contract so I would expect them back,”

Gutekunst added.

The Broader Context and What Lies Ahead

The discussions about David Montgomery’s Lions future come amid a season of mixed results and growing uncertainty. Gibbs’s support illustrates the locker room’s appreciation for Montgomery’s contributions, while leadership comments from figures like Ed Policy and Brian Gutekunst reveal a cautious approach to team roster and strategic decisions, underscoring the need for steady management rather than reactive changes.

As Montgomery evaluates his path forward, his decision will likely influence the Lions’ backfield strategy, team dynamics, and performance prospects moving into the new season. Observers and fans alike will closely watch how this situation unfolds and whether continuity or change will define the Lions’ approach in 2026.
