Snowboarding star Chloe Kim overcame a recent shoulder injury to secure first place in Wednesday’s qualifying round at the Winter Olympics in Livigno. Despite only returning to training two weeks prior after a fall in Switzerland, Kim demonstrated remarkable skill and determination in her quest for a third straight gold medal.
Remarkable Performance Highlights and Recovery
Kim’s qualifying run featured an impressive big air leap that sent her more than 13 feet above the halfpipe, highlighted by a flashy board grab. She also landed a 1080-degree spin while riding backward, distinguishing herself among over twenty competitors aiming for Thursday’s final. Wearing a shoulder brace, Kim acknowledged the challenge of recovering from the injury but credited her extensive experience for maintaining her performance level.
“She’s been very well behaved,” Kim said, referring to her left shoulder, reflecting on her recovery progress. She also expressed confidence in her muscle memory after returning to the halfpipe for the first time since last March. Kim admitted to feeling some nerves but remained focused on pushing through.
Plans and Challenges Ahead
With the final approaching, Kim intends to increase the difficulty of her routine by combining frontside and backside 900-degree spins. She conserved energy during the qualifiers by pulling out early on her second run after a minor slip. Support came in the form of hugs from her boyfriend, Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett, who was seen cheering her on.
“I’ve landed all the components of my finals run, I just haven’t put them together,”
Kim said.
“So I’ll get to do it on the big day.”
Competition and Outlook for the Final
Key contenders for the Olympic medal include American Maddie Mastro, Japan’s Sara Shimizu and Sena Tomita, South Korea’s Gaon Choi, and fellow American Bea Kim. These riders pose strong challenges as Kim aims to maintain her decade-long dominance in the sport.
The recent injury has shifted Kim’s outlook on her Olympic journey.
“If you’d asked me before the shoulder injury, I’d maybe have a different answer for you,”
she admitted.
“But just because I’m coming back from an injury, obviously I didn’t get nearly the amount of reps I would normally get going into an Olympics, I’m just really proud of myself and proud that I’ve been able to push it as far as I have.”
Significance of Kim’s Comeback at Livigno
Chloe Kim’s ability to perform at a top level despite physical setbacks underscores her resilience and dedication to snowboarding. As she advances to the finals, her journey highlights the challenges athletes face when returning from injury under intense pressure. With Myles Garrett present as a source of encouragement, Kim’s hopeful determination sets the stage for an exhilarating conclusion to the Olympic event.
