Kenneth Walker III played a pivotal role in securing the Seattle Seahawks’ Super Bowl victory this season, showcasing exceptional performance that boosted his value entering free agency. During the game against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XL, Walker rushed for 135 yards on 27 carries and added two receptions totaling 26 yards, earning him the Super Bowl MVP title.
Despite this personal accolade, Walker credits his success to the collective effort of his teammates.
“Honestly, I feel like I’m just a team player,”
Walker said.
“I’m not really focused on my personal gains. I just want to make the best impact on my team in the best way possible.”
Having spent four seasons with the Seahawks, Walker has accumulated 3,555 rushing yards, 1,005 receiving yards, and 31 total touchdowns heading into unrestricted free agency.
The Seahawks’ Strategy to Retain Walker
Seattle’s front office is expected to keep Kenneth Walker III on their roster, even if negotiations for a long-term contract do not materialize before the free agency period. CBS Sports insider Jonathan Jones reported that the Seahawks may apply the franchise tag to Walker, ensuring he remains with the team for at least the upcoming season.
Jones commented on Walker’s rising market value following his playoff performance:
“It’s no exaggeration to say he earned himself millions this postseason. The Seahawks have plenty of cap space, but both sides may struggle to immediately agree on an extension after this playoff burst.”
Jones added,
“Has he earned a Josh Jacobs- or James Cook-type deal worth $12 million per year? Or does GM John Schneider opt for the one-year, roughly $14 million tag? Either way, after the past few weeks, there is little doubt Walker will remain in Seattle.”
With running back Zach Charbonnet sidelined due to an ACL injury, maintaining Walker’s presence is vital for the Seahawks’ offensive lineup.
NFL teams will be able to use the franchise tag from February 17 to March 3 this year, providing Seattle a window to act.
Implications for Seattle and Walker’s Career
Kenneth Walker III’s status as a key contributor to the Seahawks’ Super Bowl victory places him at the center of crucial contract discussions. Securing his services, whether through a long-term deal or franchise tag, could significantly impact Seattle’s offensive capabilities moving forward. The decision will also define Walker’s future trajectory as he aims to build on his standout postseason performance.
