Southern Methodist University’s football team is set to play two high-profile games at the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium later this decade. SMU revealed that it will host Oklahoma on September 11, 2027, followed by a matchup against LSU on September 1, 2029, both at the Arlington venue.
Expanding the Mustangs’ Reach with Top SEC Matchups
These events mark a significant step for the Mustangs, who aim to grow their fan base by competing against major Southeastern Conference rivals in a much larger arena than their usual Gerald J. Ford Stadium. Since joining the Atlantic Coast Conference before the 2024 season, SMU has advanced to the conference title game and secured a spot in the College Football Playoff, raising the program’s profile nationally.
A Shared History between SMU and the Dallas Cowboys
The Mustangs and the Cowboys share a deep-rooted connection. From 1960 to 1971, both teams played home games at the Cotton Bowl. Later, they shared Texas Stadium in Irving from 1979 until 1986, coinciding with SMU’s famed Pony Express era before the NCAA imposed the “death penalty” on the Mustangs. Following that sanction, SMU moved to exclusively hosting games on campus.
SMU also maintains an annual presence at the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, where the team holds a portion of its August training camp.
AT&T Stadium’s Role in Major College Football Events
AT&T Stadium is a prominent site for several marquee college football events. It annually hosts the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic and the Big 12 Championship game. Until recently, it was also the venue for the Southwest Classic between Texas A&M and Arkansas before the series resumed play at campus locations.
Significance of SMU’s Games at AT&T Stadium
Playing at the home of the Dallas Cowboys offers SMU an opportunity to showcase its program on a grand stage and draw a wider audience. With such high-profile opponents as Oklahoma and LSU scheduled at this iconic venue, the Mustangs are poised to further solidify their standing in college football. These games will likely attract substantial attention from fans across the Dallas-Fort Worth area and beyond, reflecting the growth of SMU’s football ambitions.
