The Carolina Panthers officially voided the contract of pass rusher D.J. Wonnum on Monday as part of early offseason roster adjustments. This move comes as the team looks to create salary cap space and revamp its defensive line ahead of the upcoming NFL season.
Veteran Defensive Lineman A’Shawn Robinson’s Future Uncertain
Joe Person of The Athletic reports that veteran defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson might face release due to his current salary rather than his on-field contributions. Carolina recently signed defensive lineman Tershawn Wharton to a three-year, $45 million deal, which intensifies the need to manage cap space wisely. Cutting Robinson, who is in the final year of his contract, could free up $10.5 million in salary cap room, though the team would incur $2.1 million in dead money.
Person adds that the Panthers may instead ask Robinson to accept a pay reduction, given his reputation as one of the league’s more reliable interior linemen who continues to produce effectively.
Building Through Rookies and Undrafted Talent
Carolina has benefited in recent years from late-round rookies and undrafted signees such as wide receivers Jalen Coker, Jimmy Horn Jr., and tight end Mitchell Evans. Panthers director of college scouting Jared Kirksey emphasizes the importance of continuing to draft players who can contribute meaningfully.

“We have to have that same type of production output from each draft class,”
Kirksey stated via Mike Kaye of the Charlotte Observer.
“And that’s just focusing on staying on point with getting the right player and getting the right person. And that’s just staying true to our values of what we look for in a player.”
Prioritizing Character and Team Culture
Kirksey highlighted that the Panthers’ evaluation process extends beyond athletic ability to personal traits. Having motivated individuals who embrace teamwork plays a key role in unlocking a player’s potential.
“Part of that process is knowing what you’re getting as far as the person, first. Knowing the person, because what the person is going to let the player do is unlock the talent. Part of that is like the wiring of the player, because the wiring is either going to halt or it’s going to let that talent succeed,”
Kirksey explained.
“We want players to be driven to want to be good, want to be a good teammate,”
Kirksey added.
“Because that’s part of our process, is building a culture that players play for each other, play for their coaches, and play for the organization.”
Roster Moves by Other NFL Teams Reflect Similar Strategies
Meanwhile, similar contract and roster management issues are apparent around the league. Josh Kendall from The Athletic mentions the Atlanta Falcons might release and then re-sign quarterback Kirk Cousins if he fails to attract other offers. Falcons owner Arthur Blank reportedly does not want to pay Cousins’s $67.9 million roster bonus due March 13, influencing the team’s financial decisions.
Significance of These Changes for the Panthers’ Outlook
The voiding of D.J. Wonnum’s contract and potential adjustments involving A’Shawn Robinson signal the Panthers’ intent to reshape their defense while preserving salary flexibility. Their ongoing commitment to identifying and developing rookies and undrafted players, guided by scouts like Jared Kirksey, underscores a strategic focus on blending talent with strong character to foster a cohesive team environment. These moves could impact Carolina’s competitiveness as they navigate offseason challenges and prepare for the new NFL season.
