Michael Hoecht, who joined the Buffalo Bills on a three-year deal last season, faced an early setback in 2025 due to a six-game suspension that delayed his debut. After serving the suspension, the 28-year-old defensive player made a strong impression, recording 1.5 sacks against the Carolina Panthers and adding half a sack in the next game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Unfortunately, his season ended prematurely after tearing his right Achilles in the win over the Chiefs. Hoecht recently offered an update on his recovery, expressing confidence in returning by July 1, ahead of the 2026 season.
Hoecht shared this timeline during an interview on Eric Wood’s Centered on Buffalo podcast.
“Yeah, that’s very much my expectation, I think it’s everybody else’s expectations,”
he said.
“Timelines for Achilles, they can be as short as… I can remember Cam Akers, teammate of mine with the Rams, he did his in five months.”
While Hoecht’s rehabilitation may take a little longer than five months, he aims to complete his recovery and be ready to ramp up for training camp starting in July.
The Importance of July 1 for Hoecht’s Return
Despite past injuries often requiring a year of healing, Hoecht is optimistic about a quicker timeline.
“It used to take maybe a year, I don’t really see it taking that long,”
he stated.
“But my own personal goal for myself is to be done by July 1 and then hopefully ramp up for camp… Knowing me and knowing how I approach things, we’ll be ready to go.”
This cautious but determined target suggests Hoecht is focused on a complete recovery that aligns with the Bills’ preseason planning.
Adapting to a New Defensive Scheme with the Bills
Heading into his second season with Buffalo, Hoecht will face the challenge of fitting into a new defensive system under coordinator Jim Leonhard. However, his versatility is expected to be an asset in Leonhard’s aggressive tactics. If Hoecht reaches full health by early July, he could play a significant role on defense in 2026, potentially making a strong impact as the Bills pursue success under their revamped strategy.
