FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys have reached an agreement with running back Javonte Williams on a three-year contract worth $24 million, fulfilling the organization’s goal to retain their top rusher ahead of free agency. The deal, confirmed by the team on Saturday, guarantees $16 million for Williams, according to ESPN.
Williams’ Impact and Performance Last Season
Williams arrived at Dallas last season on a one-year deal after four injury-plagued years with the Denver Broncos. He achieved his first 1,000-yard rushing season, totaling 1,201 yards, marking the most rushing yards for a Cowboys back since Ezekiel Elliott‘s 1,357 yards in 2019. Williams’ aggressive running style contributed to the offense’s overall strength, which ranked second in the NFL for total yards and passing, seventh in scoring, and ninth in rushing.
“Javonte’s at the top of our list to go out and sign,”
said Cowboys executive vice president of personnel Stephen Jones last month.
“We want to bring him back. We want to sign him to a multiple-year deal.”
Maintaining Offensive Momentum Under Coach Brian Schottenheimer
The Cowboys are focused on preserving their productive offense under head coach Brian Schottenheimer, who emphasized the running game during his first year as play-caller. Williams responded by averaging 4.8 yards per carry and scoring 11 touchdowns, becoming a key component of the Dallas attack alongside quarterback Dak Prescott.
Looking Ahead: Retaining Other Key Players
Beyond Williams, Dallas aims to secure wide receiver George Pickens, who impressed during the 2025 season after being traded from Pittsburgh. The team has until March 3 to apply the franchise tag to Pickens, which could lead to a one-year contract worth around $30 million and extend negotiations for a longer deal until mid-July.
Significance of Williams’ Deal for Cowboys’ Future
Locking in Williams ensures the Cowboys maintain stability in their rushing attack as they prepare for the next NFL season. His durability and production help solidify an offense that flourished last year, all while contributing to the team’s goal of contending in a highly competitive league.
