With the Dallas Cowboys finalizing a tender on George Pickens and agreeing to terms with Javonte Williams, the focus now shifts to linebacker DeMarvion Overshown’s contract status. According to journalist Jon Machota, the key factor influencing Overshown’s future with the team is his ability to complete a full season on the field.
Stephen Jones, the Cowboys’ executive vice president, emphasized that availability remains the primary concern.
“Certainly, no one wants to play the game more than him. I can assure you of that. But obviously, he needs to put together a full season,”
Jones said. He expressed optimism about Overshown’s potential impact but acknowledged injury issues as the main obstacle.
“If he does, I think it’s gonna be a great season. Because I know how good he is. And what he can do for us. Fired up about what he brings to the table. The only question mark he has is injury issues that he’s had. And getting through a full year,”
Jones added.
Overshown’s Career So Far Shows Promise Despite Injury Setbacks
Selected in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, DeMarvion Overshown did not see action until the 2024 season. That year, he played in 13 games and started 12, demonstrating significant promise by recording one interception, defending four passes, and accumulating 90 tackles. His contributions also included eight tackles for loss and five quarterback hits, highlighting his ability to disrupt opposing offenses.
However, the following season was marred by injuries. Overshown appeared in only six games and started five, producing a diminished stat line of 28 tackles, one tackle for loss, and no quarterback hits. These recurring physical setbacks have put his long-term durability into question for the Cowboys’ decision-makers.

Overshown’s Determination to Improve and Overcome Challenges
Following his return from injury in November, Overshown expressed confidence that he could outperform his early season performances. “It’s simple stuff,” he remarked, explaining that his struggles were due to being “antsy, ready to play football.” He admitted focusing too much on showcasing his physical skills rather than processing the game effectively.
“It’s easy, fixable stuff, so I’m excited for this next game because I know that is, I won’t say it’s the worst I will ever play, but coming off 343 days, I can be way better than that.”

What Overshown’s Future Could Mean for the Cowboys’ Defense
The decision regarding Overshown’s contract will likely depend on his ability to stay healthy and maintain consistent performance throughout an entire season. His demonstrated potential as a playmaker excites the Cowboys’ leadership, but injury resilience remains the hurdle. Should he overcome these challenges, Overshown could become a key defensive asset for Dallas, contributing to both pass defense and quarterback pressure.
With the Cowboys managing their roster and contracts strategically, Overshown’s health and availability will remain a critical indicator of his role moving forward, potentially influencing the team’s defensive stability and overall success in coming seasons.
