On a recent Monday morning at Ball Arena, Garett Bolles, the Denver Broncos’ Pro Bowl left tackle, emphasized the importance of attitude and work ethic in maintaining the team’s strong culture. Known as a standout protector on the field, Bolles’s commitment to fitting into the Broncos’ locker room was clear just before he spoke at Scouting Colorado’s Annual Sports Breakfast. His dedication to the team is not only about football but also about fostering a positive environment that supports continued success.
From Eagle Scout to NFL’s Premier Pass Protector
Beyond his football accolades, Bolles earned the prestigious Eagle Scout rank back in 2008, reflecting his long-standing dedication to leadership and service. His childhood project involved crafting toy cars that were personally delivered by a local Santa Claus to children in rural Mexico, a gesture that left a lasting impression. This early commitment to community service remains a significant part of Bolles’s identity off the field.
“And it was really cool to see the kids’ faces of the final products,”
Garett Bolles said.
“And (Santa) would pack them all up — we would’ve put them in this big red sack. And he would fly to Mexico and deliver cars to all these rural areas.”
Lessons from Scouting Shaping Bolles’ Character
Bolles highlighted how his experiences in scouting have influenced his values, discipline, and role as a community contributor. He reflected on how these lessons continually shape him as a man and a professional athlete, underlining the importance of perseverance and giving back to others.
“Maybe back then, I didn’t appreciate (the Boy Scouts) as much as I do now,”
Bolles remarked.
“Because I think it teaches you so much as a man — teaching you to be disciplined and learning the local laws of where you live. And from doing that to doing a service project to get your Eagle Scout (requirements). Just giving back to the community is truly what scouts is about.”
Improvement and Resilience in Bolles’ NFL Career
The path to becoming one of the NFL’s most reliable left tackles was not without challenges. Early in his career, Bolles was burdened with frequent penalties, but his perseverance led to remarkable improvement. According to NFLPenalties.com, in 2018 and 2019 he accumulated numerous holding penalties, but by last season, his infractions had dropped significantly to just two holding calls. His elite performance was confirmed by Pro Football Focus, which credited him with the best pass-protection grade among all NFL offensive linemen, allowing zero sacks over 803 pass-blocking snaps.

John Elway, former Broncos executive, once described Bolles as “Mr. Available,” a title the player has since evolved toward “Mr. Essential” due to his hard work and craftsmanship.
Origin of “Kirby” Nickname and Its Significance
Bolles’s resilience has deep roots, dating back to his youth scouting days when a Scoutmaster nicknamed him “Kirby,” after the vacuum cleaner brand. This nickname emerged during a difficult mountain hike challenge, symbolizing his determination to push through hard times.
“And I said, ‘Well, I’m just going to suck it up and get up this mountain,’”
Bolles recalled.
That spirit of persistence has driven him throughout his life and football career, illustrating that success is defined by rising after each fall.
Childhood Passion for Hockey and Its Influence
Before football took precedence, Bolles was a dedicated youth hockey player in Utah, playing defense and later moving to center and left wing positions to support his teams. His fondness for the sport remains, as demonstrated by his heartfelt celebration of Team USA’s men’s hockey gold medal, a moment shared widely on social media by his wife.
“I loved it. It was fascinating,”
Bolles said.
“All my family played, so growing up was just, (all the time), it was hockey.”
Bolles recalled the cultural significance of hockey gear in his youth, underscoring his deep-rooted connection to the sport and his development as an athlete through various travel teams and youth leagues.
Legacy Building and Aspirations
Bolles’s jersey number 72 is gradually becoming synonymous with his hard work and dedication in Broncos Country. While he is proud of this recognition, his ultimate goal remains securing a Super Bowl ring, the prize he values above all, symbolizing the pinnacle of team success in the NFL.
His life lessons extend beyond the gridiron. Bolles recounted a unique scouting experience that demanded navigating back from an unfamiliar location using only a compass, a reminder of the invaluable skills he gained from his time as a scout.
“I remember one of our (Scouting) leaders would drop us off in the middle of somewhere and we had to navigate ourselves back with the compass,”
Bolles said with a chuckle.
“And who uses the compass now? These are all life lessons … just all the life lessons that I learned have truly helped me become the man I am today.”
Recognition and Impact on the NFL
In 2023, Bolles was honored as a finalist for the NFL’s inaugural Protector of the Year Award, recognizing his elite pass-blocking abilities. Although the award ultimately went to Bears guard Joe Thuney, Bolles’s performance established him as one of the league’s finest protectors. His story of growth, discipline, and community service highlights the broader impact athletes can have beyond their sport.
The Greater Meaning of Bolles’ Journey
Garett Bolles exemplifies the powerful intersection of athletic excellence and personal integrity. His progress from a young Eagle Scout with a passion for giving back to a dominant NFL protector and team leader illustrates the influence of resilience, character, and dedication. As the Broncos continue to build on their recent successes, Bolles’s role both on and off the field will remain essential, inspiring teammates and fans alike to uphold high standards in all aspects of life.
