Phidarian Mathis Seals One-Year Deal with Buffalo Bills

Phidarian Mathis, once uncertain about his NFL future, secured a one-year contract with the Buffalo Bills ahead of the 2026 season. After joining the Bills during the 2025 campaign, Mathis capitalized on an injury-riddled defensive line to prove his value on the field in Buffalo.

Mathis Reflects on His NFL Journey and New Opportunity

Following several setbacks early in his career, Mathis grew uncertain about his path in professional football.

“I thought it was over. I didn’t know what was next,”

Mathis shared with Ian Mills of News 10 NBC in December 2025. He added,

“But since I’ve been here, man, it kind of changed my perspective. Just take advantage of the opportunity that God gave me, and that’s what I’m trying to do right now.”

Making an Impact with the Bills in 2025

The 6-foot-4, 310-pound defensive tackle made the most of his time on the field in Buffalo, where injuries to the Bills’ defensive tackle group created openings for him. Over six games, Mathis recorded 13 total tackles, gradually moving up the depth chart and gaining more playing time as the season progressed. His contributions came as the Bills prepared to shift defensive strategies under new coordinator Jim Leonhard, who sees Mathis as a fitting piece for his revamped lineup.

Early Career and Challenges Before Buffalo

Mathis entered the NFL as a highly regarded prospect from Alabama, where he tallied 129 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, and 10.5 sacks during his four-season collegiate career. Highlighting 2021, he notched nine sacks in a single season. Selected 47th overall by Washington in the 2022 NFL Draft, Mathis’ pro start was marred by injuries: a meniscus tear in his first game landed him on injured reserve, followed by a calf injury limiting him to 10 games in his second year.

Washington eventually released Mathis after his third season. The New York Jets picked him up off waivers late in 2024 but released him before the start of the 2025 season. Despite these challenges, Mathis found new footing with Buffalo, working to rebuild his career.

Future Outlook for Mathis with Buffalo

As Mathis enters the upcoming offseason with the Bills, his one-year deal offers a chance to continue building momentum and demonstrate his reliability on defense. The move signals the Bills’ confidence that Mathis’ abilities will complement Jim Leonhard’s defensive approach, potentially securing a more prominent role for him moving forward. Mathis’ story reflects the resilience of a player determined to turn early career adversity into lasting NFL success.
