Dolphins GM Hints at Possible Tua Tagovailoa Trade Move

The Miami Dolphins are undergoing a major transformation this offseason under new leadership, as general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan and head coach Jeff Hafley steer the franchise in a new direction. Several prominent players, including Tyreek Hill and Bradley Chubb, have already been released, signaling significant roster changes. At the center of the turmoil is quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, whose future with the team now appears uncertain amid persistent trade rumors.

General Manager Addresses Speculation About Tagovailoa’s Status

During a recent appearance at the 2026 NFL Draft Combine, Dolphins GM Jon-Eric Sullivan addressed the swirling rumors about Tagovailoa’s position with the team. Sullivan confirmed that the organization is actively seeking a new franchise quarterback and revealed that all options, including trading Tagovailoa, remain under consideration.

“Dolphins GM Jon-Eric Sullivan on Tua Tagovailoa status ‘everything is on table, including possibility of a trade,’”

reported Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network on X. Sullivan also clarified Tagovailoa has not requested a trade.

“Sully said Tua hasn’t requested a trade. As we’ve noted, Dolphins are in process of finding new franchise QB & team preference is a trade over a release. We’ll see,”

Wolfe added.

Tagovailoa’s trajectory with Miami has been turbulent. Selected fifth overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, he showed signs of promise by leading the league with 4,624 passing yards in 2023, culminating in his first Pro Bowl appearance. However, injuries and offensive struggles under former coach Mike McDaniel contributed to a steep decline. His 2025 season was marked by inefficiency and turnovers, culminating in his benching for the final three games in favor of rookie Quinn Ewers.

Financial Motivations Behind Possible Trade

The Dolphins’ interest in trading Tagovailoa is driven largely by salary cap considerations tied to his lucrative four-year, $212.5 million contract signed in 2024. Releasing him outright would result in a net loss of cap space, whereas executing a trade could potentially save the team up to $42.8 million. This financial calculus is a key factor in the front office’s willingness to explore trade opportunities rather than simply cutting ties.

However, the challenges remain significant. To facilitate a trade, Miami would likely need to absorb a substantial portion of Tagovailoa’s remaining salary. Moreover, given the team’s openness to releasing him if no trade materializes, their negotiating leverage is minimal. As a result, despite the desire to move him via trade, the more probable outcome could be a release before the season begins, freeing the team from contractual obligations but sacrificing potential salary cap relief.

Future Outlook for Tagovailoa and the Dolphins’ Quarterback Position

The Dolphins are clearly in the process of redefining their quarterback situation as the new regime establishes its vision. How the Tagovailoa saga unfolds will significantly impact the team’s strategy in the coming months, including the search for a replacement capable of leading Miami’s offense forward. With the NFL offseason progressing rapidly, the decision on Tagovailoa will be pivotal for the Dolphins’ roster construction and salary cap management heading into the 2026 campaign.
