At the recent Scouting Combine, new Dolphins General Manager Jon-Eric Sullivan confirmed ongoing evaluations across the roster and admitted that a trade involving Tagovailoa remains on the table.
“As it pertains to Tua, we’ve had conversations with Tua and his representation. Everything is on the table, including the potential of a trade. We don’t know which way that’s going to go. There’s a lot of different factors at play, a lot of conversations being had,”
Sullivan explained.
Financial Consequences Complicate Release or Trade Decisions
Releasing Tagovailoa outright would impose a significant dead cap hit of $99 million against the Dolphins’ 2024 salary cap. Alternatively, the team could designate him as a post-June 1 cut to spread the cap hit over two seasons, but both options carry heavy financial repercussions that complicate roster planning.
Emerging Quarterback Options and Future Plans
Despite uncertainties surrounding Tagovailoa’s future, the Dolphins appear ready to move forward with quarterback Quinn Ewers, who impressed late in the 2023 season. Sullivan acknowledged Ewers’ progress and confirmed the team’s intention to acquire at least one more quarterback through the draft.
“Evaluating the roster, Quinn did a nice job toward the end of the year. Excited about what’s ahead for him,”
said Sullivan. Regarding Tagovailoa, he added,
“Tua, I thought, even though things didn’t go well at the end of the year, did some good things along the way. It’s my job to infuse competition into that room as well as every other room.”
