The Baltimore Ravens are actively engaged in discussions to extend Lamar Jackson’s contract as the team prepares for the upcoming NFL free agency period. At the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, general manager Eric DeCosta revealed that Jackson has been heavily involved in the team’s recent coaching search and that talks about his contract extension have been progressing.
Jackson, 29, currently carries the highest salary-cap hit in the NFL at $73.5 million for 2026, which poses challenges for the Ravens’ roster planning. Securing an extension with the two-time MVP quarterback, who represents himself in negotiations, could reduce that salary cap number and help the team retain key players or pursue new talent.
Details on Contract Talks and Team Strategy
DeCosta confirmed the ongoing communication with Jackson, saying,
“Lamar and I have an agreement, We handle business kind of in-house internally. That worked well for us last time and we will continue to have that policy moving forward. Have spoken to Lamar about a lot of different things over the last month. He’s been very engaged. He was a big value to us in the coaching search, but we’ll continue those conversations moving forward.”
DeCosta’s approach reflects a close working relationship aimed at reaching a mutually beneficial outcome.
Aside from the quarterback negotiations, DeCosta emphasized the importance of re-signing center Tyler Linderbaum, as the front line remains a major focus for the Ravens with free agency’s March 9 start. The Ravens declined Linderbaum’s fifth-year option for 2026 but have extended a market-setting offer and are optimistic about retaining him.
“Obviously he’s proven to be, in my opinion, the best center of the league, Hopefully we can get something done with him between now and the start of the new league year.”
DeCosta stressed that strengthening both the offensive and defensive trenches is vital to the team’s success moving forward.
New Leadership and Future Prospects for the Ravens
The Ravens recently hired Jesse Minter, former defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers, as their new head coach, replacing John Harbaugh. This change adds a fresh dynamic as Lamar Jackson’s contract talks proceed alongside roster decisions.
With Jackson playing a key role not only on the field but also in leadership and team-building, the outcome of his contract extension will significantly shape the Ravens’ direction in the coming seasons. Resolving these negotiations promptly will provide clarity and allow the team to focus on free agency and their overall competitive strategy.
