Sam Darnold Reflects on Vikings Choosing J.J. McCarthy Over Him

Before becoming a Super Bowl champion with the Seattle Seahawks, Sam Darnold played a pivotal role for the Minnesota Vikings, guiding the team to one of its best regular seasons in recent decades. However, his time with Minnesota ended as the franchise opted to move forward with a younger quarterback, J.J. McCarthy. This decision led Darnold to enter free agency and eventually sign with Seattle, where his career trajectory significantly improved.

Darnold’s Perspective on the Vikings’ Decision

Speaking on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, Sam Darnold expressed understanding about the Vikings’ choice to prioritize the younger talent despite the personal difficulty of not being retained. Acknowledging the financial and strategic considerations that front offices face, he emphasized his respect for J.J. McCarthy’s potential and intelligence as a player.

I understand how difficult it can be, and you have a lot of decisions that you have to make as a GM, as a head coach, and so for me personally, obviously I believe in myself, and I understand in my abilities, but at the same time I understand their thought process of going with the younger kid and especially JJ. I think JJ’s very talented. He’s super smart, and there’s a lot of potential there. And I think JJ’s going to be a really, really good player in this league,

Darnold said.

He also reflected on how moving on from the Vikings eventually felt like the right choice, even if it was initially hard to accept.

And that allowed them to kind of not sign me to maybe a bigger deal and bring some veteran guys in. I think when I sat back and really digested, I guess, the information, that they didn’t want me back, that was a little little bit of a tough pill to swallow, but when I really stood back and looked at it from afar, I really understood the decision and I really did, and I’m thankful that I landed in Seattle.

Comparing Outcomes: Vikings vs. Seahawks

After Darnold’s exit, Minnesota endured instability at the quarterback position, relying on players such as Carson Wentz and Max Brosmer due to injuries. In contrast, Darnold became a key figure for the Seahawks, solidifying his role and emerging as a central star. This contrast raises questions about how the Vikings’ season might have unfolded had they retained Darnold and whether they could have represented the NFC in the Super Bowl instead of Seattle.

Looking Forward for J.J. McCarthy and the Vikings

J.J. McCarthy remains viewed as a highly promising quarterback for the Vikings, and the team’s future plans suggest continuing their investment in his development. Meanwhile, Sam Darnold’s journey reflects a story of resilience and progress, highlighting the shifting dynamics within the NFL and how player careers can pivot based on crucial franchise decisions.
