Eagles Won’t Guarantee A.J. Brown’s Return Amid Trade Rumors

Amid ongoing A.J. Brown trade speculation, Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni recently stated that the team cannot assure Brown’s return for the 2026 season. Despite Brown’s multiyear contract extension through 2029 worth $96 million signed in 2024, tensions between the wide receiver and the franchise intensified following a sideline altercation during the Eagles’ wild card playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

The conflict, combined with Brown’s reduced production last season, has carried into the offseason, resulting in Sirianni’s cautious comments at the NFL combine about the player’s status.

Coach’s Hesitant Response at NFL Combine

Sirianni was noncommittal regarding Brown’s future with Philadelphia, emphasizing the unpredictability of roster decisions moving forward.

Will A.J. be here next season? I think we’re still in a spot, like, I can’t guarantee how anything is going to play out into next season,

Sirianni said.

I’m thinking I’m going to be the coach next season but you can’t guarantee anything past tomorrow.

This cautious stance reflects ongoing uncertainty within the organization about Brown’s role in the team’s plans.

Tensions Rise Over Brown’s Offensive Usage

Brown has publicly expressed frustration regarding his involvement in the Eagles’ offense, despite posting solid numbers with 78 receptions for 1,003 yards and seven touchdowns last year. Over his four seasons in Philadelphia, which include two Super Bowl appearances, Brown has experienced a noticeable decline in targets after initial back-to-back 1,400-yard campaigns in 2022 and 2023.

This decline in opportunities has reportedly caused discomfort for Brown, complicating his relationship with the team’s coaching staff and management.

Sirianni and Roseman Address Brown’s Commitment and Trade Talks

While Sirianni acknowledged Brown’s desire to remain with the Eagles, he stopped short of offering any firm assurances. He praised Brown’s qualities on and off the field while admitting the uncertainty that exists.

My expectation is he wants to be here. And obviously you want good players like that in your building,

Sirianni stated.

As Howie said, it’s hard to get good players in this league. A.J.’s a great player and A.J. is a good teammate and A.J. is a good person. Does he want to be here? Yes. Do I want him to be here? Yes.

Similarly, general manager Howie Roseman commented on the team’s openness to trade discussions involving Brown, highlighting the importance of evaluating all potential opportunities to strengthen the roster.

I think you go into the league year listening to offers for everything and anything,

Roseman explained.

If someone is going to give you something you didn’t anticipate and you won’t even have the conversation, I don’t think you’re necessarily doing your job or really servicing the team you’re with. You never know what someone is willing to do. Certainly, we’ve been in situations where there were guys we didn’t anticipate trading that we got an offer that was too good, and then you balance it with what you can get there.

Without getting into specifics on any player, we’re always listening and we’re always kind of open. There’s very few things that I would shoot down without even hearing what that means, because how does it hurt to listen?

Trade Prospects Weighed Amid Contract and Performance Factors

The Eagles acquired Brown in the 2022 NFL Draft by trading away first- and third-round selections to the Tennessee Titans. Although Brown remains a valuable asset, his age (29) and extensive contract might limit Philadelphia’s trade options compared to the original acquisition cost. The current market conditions suggest that the return the Eagles could receive in any deal would likely be less substantial.

Implications for the Eagles and Next Steps

The ongoing uncertainty surrounding Brown’s status highlights internal challenges for the Eagles in managing a key player who has contributed significantly yet feels underutilized. How management navigates this situation may impact team chemistry and roster construction heading into the next season. Monitoring trade discussions and organizational decisions will be crucial as Philadelphia attempts to balance competitiveness with player satisfaction amid high-stakes NFL negotiations.
