Packers Face Crucial Lukas Van Ness Contract Decision by May 1

The Green Bay Packers are approaching a May 1 deadline to determine whether to exercise the fifth-year option on defensive lineman Lukas Van Ness’s contract, which would secure him approximately $15.381 million for the 2027 season. This pivotal decision revolves around whether the team believes Van Ness’s future contributions justify the guaranteed salary.

Van Ness’s Performance and Injury History Under Review

Selected 13th overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, Lukas Van Ness has recorded 8.5 sacks, 23 quarterback hits, and 84 tackles over 43 games spanning three seasons. However, his impact has been tempered by limited starting opportunities; he has started only twice and appeared in just nine games during the 2025 season due to a foot injury. Despite playing all 17 games in his first two seasons, he never participated in more than 40 percent of defensive snaps.

Packers Leadership Contemplates Future Potential Over Past Results

General Manager Brian Gutekunst has emphasized that the decision focuses more on Van Ness’s potential moving forward rather than past performance.

“It’s about what we think he’s going to do in the future, not what he’s done in the past,”

Gutekunst said Tuesday, according to Bill Huber of Sports Illustrated.

“So, that’s kind of how we look at things. We did that with Devonte [Wyatt] last year. If that’s the decision we decide to do, I won’t have a problem with that at all.”

Concerns Over Playing Time and Need for Increased Production

The Packers are seeking greater consistency and production from Van Ness, especially as a contract year looms if they opt not to pick up his fifth-year option. Gutekunst acknowledged the setback caused by Van Ness’s missed games in 2025 due to injury.

“I would’ve liked to get those games back that he missed this past year because he was playing at such a high level for us,”

the GM remarked.

“Anytime you miss those kind of games in a year, it kind of stunts you a little bit.”

Optimism Remains Despite Recent Challenges

Despite the challenges, the Packers remain confident in Van Ness’s trajectory. Gutekunst noted,

“He was playing very well for us. It’s always tough to get back to that level when you have that pause in the season. No, we feel really good about him, where he’s headed, what he’s done for us so far and what he’ll do for us in the future.”
