Former NFL Safety Willie Offord Named Head Coach in SC

AC Flora High School in South Carolina has appointed former Gamecock defensive standout Willie Offord as its new head football coach, beginning with the 2026 season. This NFL South Carolina coaching move was confirmed by the school’s athletic department on Friday, marking a significant change for the Midlands program.

Offord joins the Falcons after coaching at Lakewood High School and succeeds Ken Floyd, who led AC Flora for four seasons and guided the team to an 11-win campaign and postseason appearance in 2025.

Offord’s Coaching Path and Football Legacy

Offord brings extensive coaching experience, including head coaching roles at several Florida high schools such as North Marion, Palatka, Interlachen, and Paxon, where he notably led North Marion to a state title game. His South Carolina roots include coaching at Columbia High School and serving as an assistant at various schools across the state, as well as a stint at Newberry College.

During his collegiate playing days at USC, Offord was a versatile defensive player under head coaches Brad Scott and Lou Holtz. He contributed at safety, outside linebacker, and the hybrid spur position, playing a key role in USC’s remarkable turnaround from a winless 1999 season to an eight-win season in 2000.

Offord was known for his impactful tackling and earned All-SEC recognition as a senior before being drafted in the third round of the 2002 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. His professional career included five seasons in the NFL with seven starts and two interceptions, though injuries led to his retirement in 2007.

Implications for AC Flora and South Carolina Football

This coaching appointment highlights the increasing trend of former South Carolina players contributing to football development within the state. Offord’s deep ties to South Carolina football and his diverse coaching background position him to build on AC Flora’s recent success and influence the program’s future growth. Fans and insiders are now watching closely as he shapes the Falcons leading into the 2026 season and beyond.
