Fernando Mendoza Eyes Tom Brady Mentorship If Drafted No. 1

Fernando Mendoza, the former Indiana Hoosiers quarterback and a leading contender for the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, expressed enthusiasm about the prospect of being mentored by Tom Brady if selected by the Las Vegas Raiders. As the Raiders prepare to make their top draft choice in April, Mendoza attended the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, where he spoke about the potential opportunity to learn from the seven-time Super Bowl champion.

Las Vegas Raiders’ Quarterback Future and Brady’s Role

The Raiders find themselves in an intriguing quarterback situation, as Tom Brady, who became a minority owner of the team in 2024, remains involved off the field without a coaching role. The franchise has lacked a young quarterback to develop under Brady’s guidance in recent seasons, but this is poised to change if the Raiders invest their high draft pick in a promising signal-caller like Mendoza.

Though Brady was not present at the combine in Indianapolis, Mendoza revealed they had a brief phone conversation. When asked about the possibility of working with the NFL legend, Mendoza responded enthusiastically, acknowledging Brady’s unparalleled success.

Mendoza Reflects on Admiration and Learning from Brady

“Yeah, I mean, who hasn’t admired Tom Brady? I mean, more Super Bowl rings than anybody … anybody!”

Mendoza said.

“So, that opportunity would be fantastic.”

He added,

“Brady, I believe, is the greatest quarterback of all time – by a wide margin – and to be able to have the opportunity to be mentored by him would mean so much. Especially to learn, and I’m all about learning. So from day one, I’ve got to learn a lot.”

It’s going to be a long journey, and to potentially have a mentor like that, it would be pretty impressive and pretty meaningful.

Positive Impression at Raiders Meeting Amid Draft Uncertainty

Mendoza also shared details about his meeting with the Raiders’ coaching staff, including Klint Kubiak, the new head coach and former Super Bowl-winning offensive coordinator with the Seattle Seahawks. The team aims to rebuild after a fourth consecutive losing season, and Mendoza described his interview experience positively.

“It was a fantastic interview,” Mendoza said.

“The coaching staff were in there. We went over some of my previous plays and drew some plays on the board. I thought it was a great meeting, and I know they have the prospective No 1 pick, but anything can happen in the draft. I’m just excited for the opportunity.”

Whatever team drafts me, I’m just going to give everything I have to them.

Implications and Next Steps for Mendoza’s NFL Journey

As the NFL Draft approaches, Fernando Mendoza stands as a talented quarterback with a promising future, especially if paired with a mentor like Tom Brady. The Raiders’ commitment to a new head coach and roster overhaul indicates a focus on growth and success in the coming years. Mendoza’s eagerness to learn from one of the game’s greatest players highlights his dedication to development and adaptability.

Whether or not he ultimately lands with Las Vegas, Mendoza’s combination of skill, attitude, and willingness to embrace mentorship could shape his NFL career positively, setting a foundation for what fans hope will be a successful transition to the professional level.
