The Dallas Cowboys placed a nonexclusive franchise tag on wide receiver George Pickens on Friday, setting his 2026 salary at $27.298 million. Despite this move, Pickens’ status with the team remains uncertain as contract negotiations continue and no long-term agreement has yet been reached.
Pickens had an outstanding 2025 season with the Cowboys, catching 93 passes for 1,429 yards and scoring nine touchdowns. Dallas traded a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick to acquire him from the Pittsburgh Steelers, highlighting his value. Yet, whether he will remain with the Cowboys beyond the franchise tag remains to be seen.
Implications of the Nonexclusive Tag and Contract Outlook
The nonexclusive designation placed on Pickens means other NFL teams can negotiate with him beginning March 11 when free agency opens. Should another team sign Pickens to an offer sheet, the Cowboys have the option to match that offer or decline and receive two first-round draft picks as compensation.
“Should Pickens sign an offer sheet with another team, the Cowboys will have the right to match the offer or decline to do so and receive two first-round draft picks as compensation,”
ESPN’s Todd Archer explained.
Meanwhile, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Pickens is unlikely to report to the Cowboys facility without a long-term contract in place.
“Don’t expect him to sign the tag yet,”
Rapoport said.
I would also wonder if there is another team that wants to give a premium draft pick and sign Pickens to a long-term deal themselves.
Teams Express Interest in Acquiring Pickens
Among the potential trade candidates, the Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs have been identified as teams that might pursue Pickens. Both franchises are in urgent need of a top-tier No. 1 wide receiver to strengthen their offenses.
“The Chiefs and Ravens both need a classic boundary receiver on the outside and could address that with one big move in free agency. George Pickens would be a significant upgrade in Baltimore,”
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN wrote.
“… Pickens might be franchise-tagged by Dallas. But if available, the Ravens could use some of their $40 million in 2026 cap space on Pickens, knowing John Harbaugh is good at managing big personalities.”
An agreement that involves draft picks could make a trade feasible, allowing either the Ravens or Chiefs to add Pickens this offseason.
Looking Ahead: Pickens’ Role for the 2026 Season
For the time being, George Pickens is expected to return to the Cowboys for the upcoming season under the franchise tag. However, the ongoing contract discussions and interest from other teams highlight the potential for a major trade before the NFL season begins. The situation will be a key storyline as free agency approaches and teams weigh their options regarding their rosters and draft assets.
