Patrick Mahomes Skips $52M Event Amid Offseason Recovery

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is dedicating his offseason to regaining full strength after tearing his ACL and MCL during Week 15 of the NFL season. While working through his rehabilitation, Mahomes is spending significant time at the team’s training center in Missouri, aiming to return to peak condition for the upcoming season.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid recently shared that Mahomes commits about seven hours daily to his recovery routine at the facility.

“He’s in there cranking away, making progress every day,”

Reid remarked. Alongside his demanding rehabilitation, Mahomes is also balancing family commitments, including celebrating his daughter Sterling’s fifth birthday last weekend in Dallas-Fort Worth with his wife, Brittany.

Supporting Women’s Sports: The Mahomes Family’s Role with the Kansas City Current

Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Mahomes actively participate as co-owners of the Kansas City Current, a professional women’s soccer team in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). Brittany, a founding co-owner alongside Chris and Angie Long, and Patrick joined ownership in January 2023. The couple is preparing for the 2026 NWSL season, which begins with a home game against the Utah Royals on March 14.

The Current recently underwent major developments following their intense 2025 season. With a new head coach, Chris Armas, and significant roster changes, the team is refocusing its efforts. While the Mahomeses customarily attend games, they were notably absent from a recent milestone event.

Missed Unveiling of $52 Million Performance Complex

In July 2023, the Kansas City Current announced a $52 million project involving a three-tiered expansion including the Riverside Stadium, The Performance Center, and pitch enhancements near their existing facilities in Riverside, Missouri. Brittany and Patrick publicly shared their enthusiasm for this advancement on social media at the time.

The Riverside Stadium will seat 2,000 spectators and boasts a FIFA-certified, heated grass pitch with upgraded amenities designed to accommodate the 2026 Men’s World Cup as a potential base camp. Despite their early support, both were absent at the official launch of the new performance center on February 25.

The Kansas City Current highlighted the event on their Instagram, stating,

“Raising the global standard in women’s sports 🙌 KC Current unveils a new performance center dedicated to the development of players & growing the game.”

While the Mahomes couple was missing, co-owners Chris and Angie Long were present. Chris Long emphasized the importance of this investment, saying,

“Investing in women’s sports is not symbolic. It is strategic. It strengthens communities, inspires young people, and drives economic growth. Riverside Stadium & Performance Center is about leveling up the game again.”

This state-of-the-art, 35,000-square-foot performance facility is accompanied by four new youth soccer fields, enhancing training opportunities for current and future athletes.

Plans for Expansion into WNBA Training Facilities

The owners of the Kansas City Current have reserved a portion of the land to develop a training facility for a prospective WNBA expansion team. Chris Long shared with ESPN last year,

“We think that will happen at some point.”

Despite their efforts, Kansas City was not selected in the recent WNBA expansion announcements, which awarded new teams to Cleveland in 2028, Detroit in 2029, and Philadelphia in 2030. The league had previously added teams in Toronto and Portland.

Patrick Mahomes has expressed strong support for bringing a WNBA franchise to the region. He told reporters in February,

“You see how Kansas City has embraced all sports that have been in the city, especially women’s sports, I’ve seen it first hand with the Kansas City Current. I know if we were able to get a WNBA team to Kansas City, it would be packed every single night.”

Mahomes added,

“That’s just the kind of atmosphere that we have in Kansas City. I’m hoping we can get that done and we can continue to push women’s sports forward.”

Balancing Recovery and Community Involvement

As Patrick Mahomes concentrates on his offseason recovery, his absence from high-profile community events reflects the rigorous demands of his rehabilitation. At the same time, his ongoing commitment to sports development in Kansas City, especially supporting women’s teams, underscores his broader impact beyond football.

Looking ahead, Mahomes’s progress in healing will be closely watched by fans and teammates eager for his return to the field, while the Kansas City Current aims to build on their recent investments and prepare for growth in women’s professional sports.
