Kansas City Chiefs’ Worthy Holds NFL Combine Speed Record

On Saturday, Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy maintained his position as the fastest player ever in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, continuing to hold the all-time record. Despite strong challenges from other athletes, Worthy’s record-setting performance remains unmatched in Kansas City.

At the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine, Worthy stunned spectators by breaking John Ross‘s previous 2017 record, registering a remarkable 4.21-second 40-yard dash. This achievement confirmed Worthy, the No. 28 overall draft pick, as the quickest athlete ever recorded at the event.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame honored Worthy’s landmark accomplishment by featuring artifacts from his historic run in Canton, Ohio. Included are his distinctive burnt orange track shoes from the University of Texas and the jersey he wore, now displayed as iconic symbols of his speed.

Worthy’s Determined Mindset Fueled His Record-Breaking Run

Worthy entered the Combine confident in his abilities, saying,

I definitely knew I had a chance. I didn’t know it was going to happen in reality,

in a post-event interview. He added,

I came in knowing I was going to run nothing slower than 4.25.

His first dash at the event matched that goal at 4.25 seconds. Motivated to improve, Worthy approached his second attempt sure he could reduce his time further.

Explaining his training strategy, he remarked,

When I was training, I always ran faster on my second 40,

which gave him the confidence to push harder during his follow-up sprint.

Other Competitors Nearly Matched Worthy’s Speed but Fell Short

While a few athletes came close to Worthy’s record on Saturday, none could surpass it. Notably, former Oklahoma Sooners and Mississippi State Bulldogs wide receiver Brenen Thompson clocked in at 4.26 seconds. Ohio State Buckeyes cornerback Lorenzo Styles finished with a 4.27, and LSU Tigers wide receiver Zavion Thomas recorded a 4.28.

Though these times were impressively fast, the margin—just a fraction of a second difference—still firmly secures Worthy as the fastest 40-yard dash runner. Observers noted that several participants showed potential to approach this record with additional attempts, but Worthy’s top speed remains unmatched.

Kansas City Chiefs Continue Building Through NFL Draft Meetings

The Chiefs have been active in engaging with prospects during the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine, holding formal discussions as they prepare for future drafts. This strategic move aligns with their goal of strengthening the team by targeting top talent across key positions.

These assemblies reflect the organization’s commitment to maintaining the competitive edge exemplified by players like Worthy, whose record-setting performance underscores the value of speed and agility in the league.

The retention of Worthy’s NFL Combine record highlights the Kansas City Chiefs’ ability to develop elite athletes capable of historic feats. As the franchise continues evaluating promising football talent at upcoming combines and drafts, their focus on speed and athleticism will remain a vital factor in sustaining success.
