Chiefs to Release Jawaan Taylor in Major Cap Move

The Kansas City Chiefs have decided to release right tackle Jawaan Taylor before the NFL‘s new league year begins on March 11, according to sources cited by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. This decision is part of the team’s strategy to reduce salary cap commitments and improve financial flexibility heading into the 2026 NFL season.

Financial Impact and Recent Cap Management Moves

By releasing Taylor, the Chiefs will save approximately $20 million against the salary cap, helping them get underneath the cap after entering the offseason $57 million over. This move follows other recent adjustments, including the release of veteran defensive end Mike Danna and a contract restructuring with quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Additional cap space may be freed up through possible releases of linebacker Drue Tranquill and tight end Noah Gray, along with restructures involving key players like pass rusher Chris Jones and center Creed Humphrey.

Jawaan Taylor’s Tenure and On-Field Performance

Jawaan Taylor, 28, joined Kansas City in 2023 as a free agent on a four-year contract worth $80 million, with one year left remaining. He contributed to stabilizing the Chiefs’ offensive line during their successful campaign to win back-to-back Super Bowls—the NFL’s first repeat champions in two decades. However, despite solid pass-blocking performance, Taylor faced challenges with discipline on the field, accumulating 49 penalties (41 accepted) over 45 games, the highest among Chiefs’ linemen in that time frame.

Projected Changes at Right Tackle Position

With Taylor’s release, five-year veteran Jaylon Moore, who recently signed a two-year deal valued at $30 million, is expected to take over as the starting right tackle for the 2026 season. This shift reflects the team’s commitment to managing the cap while maintaining competitive performance on the offensive line.
