Buffalo Bills President of Football Operations and General Manager Brandon Beane has issued a direct challenge to wide receiver Keon Coleman, stressing the need for consistent performance and maturity as Coleman prepares for his third NFL season in 2025. Speaking at the NFL combine on Tuesday, Beane emphasized that Coleman’s future with the team depends largely on repeating the dedication and hard work he demonstrated during previous offseasons, while avoiding off-field distractions.
Keon Coleman’s Fluctuating Early Career and Discipline Concerns
Selected 33rd overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, Keon Coleman has shown promising talent but struggled with reliability throughout his tenure with the Bills. Beane highlighted Coleman’s strong offseason commitment, recalling that he arrived at every training phase ready and focused.
“He came to Phase 1, Phase 2, all that stuff, dialed in, ready to go,”
Beane said.
“You could tell he’d been working out and then, a lot of the people here were at training camp. He had an excellent camp. Let’s do that again.”
Despite these positive signs during preparation, Coleman’s on-field impact has been inconsistent. Over two seasons, disciplinary issues have interrupted his progress: he faced consequences from former coach Sean McDermott in November for tardiness to a team meeting, was sidelined as a healthy scratch for four games last season, and was benched during his rookie campaign for off-field timing problems. Following the 2025 season, Coleman had dropped to the sixth spot on the Bills’ wide receiver depth chart.
Statistically, Coleman logged 38 receptions for 404 yards and four touchdowns across 13 games last season, yet failed to exceed 50 receiving yards in any contest after the season opener, where he recorded 112 yards and a touchdown.

Off-Field Challenges Affecting Team Trust and Cohesion
Off-field issues have influenced Coleman’s standing within the team and the organization’s overall trust in him. Team owner Terry Pegula stirred attention by suggesting that the coaching staff, rather than Beane, was behind the decision to draft Coleman. However, Beane has consistently affirmed that the selection was his. Previously, Beane acknowledged that Coleman’s absences due to various issues led to diminished trust and rapport with teammates.
“Every game he’s missing, the trust and the camaraderie is kind of dropping for him,”
Beane explained.
“Like that’s just the truth. And I don’t know that that fully ever recovered.”
Despite these challenges, the arrival of new leadership has brought renewed support. New head coach Joe Brady, who served as the Bills’ full-time offensive coordinator for the past two seasons, publicly voiced confidence in Coleman’s place on the roster, signaling a commitment to his development.
Buffalo Bills Aim to Build a Reliable Receiving Core for Josh Allen
As the Bills advance their preparations for the 2025 season at the NFL combine, the wide receiver group remains a primary focus, given the inconsistencies within the unit last year. The organization seeks to acquire receivers with versatile skill sets who can complement quarterback Josh Allen’s playing style and expectations.
Beane explained Allen’s preferences for his receivers:
“Like any quarterback, [Allen] wants ’em to be where they’re supposed to be when they’re supposed to be, and he wants ’em dependable. Obviously, he wants them to catch the ball, but Josh is usually ‘give me what you got, and I’ll make the most of it.’ And so, I think it’s my job and our job to find as many versatile skill sets at receiver as we can.”
New Coaching Staff Brings Fresh Direction for Coleman’s Development
With changes in the coaching staff, the Bills are eager to integrate Coleman more effectively into their system. Beane noted the new coaches’ enthusiasm about working with him, pointing out their longtime awareness of Coleman since the draft process.
“And I know we’ve got some new coaches, and they’re excited to meet him and get to work with him and were aware of him in the draft process a couple of years ago, and so they kind want to try to start mold him in the way they see and envision him for our team.”
Coleman’s ability to exhibit maturity both on and off the field will be pivotal in determining how his role evolves with the Buffalo Bills moving forward, especially as the franchise seeks to stabilize and optimize its receiving squad to support Josh Allen.
