49ers Confident in Closing New Deal with Trent Williams Soon

San Francisco 49ers General Manager John Lynch has conveyed strong optimism regarding ongoing contract negotiations with left tackle Trent Williams. Speaking from the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Lynch indicated that discussions with Williams and his agent have been productive, with the aim of finalizing a new agreement for the veteran player before the new league year.

Williams is entering the final year of his current deal that carries a hefty salary cap hit of $38.84 million for the upcoming season, including a base salary of $22.21 million and a $10 million option bonus due soon. Securing a new contract soon is critical for the 49ers as it would provide financial clarity before the free agency negotiating window opens in early March 2026.

Details on Discussions Indicate a Shared Desire to Keep Williams

Lynch revealed that he has held multiple constructive and meaningful meetings with Williams and the player’s agent, Vincent Taylor. The general manager emphasized the mutual respect and desire to find a resolution that works for both parties while navigating the complexities related to Williams’ age.

“What I’ll tell you is that in recent weeks I’ve met with both Trent and with his agent, Vincent Taylor, and had really good, productive and substantive meetings,” Lynch stated. “And so, here’s what I know. Trent loves being a Niner. We love having Trent as a Niner and it’s up to us to figure that out and to thread that needle. There are some unique circumstances in that we all know what Trent is as a player, how great of a player he’s been. He’s going to be 38 years old and so there’s some things that go into that, but I think we’re all on the same page and feel very positive about where that’s going.”

Williams’ current contract offers no additional guaranteed money beyond this season and includes three void years, increasing the urgency for a new deal that aligns with both the team’s salary cap strategy and Williams’ playing aspirations.

Williams’ Continued Elite Play and Plans for the Future

Approaching his 38th birthday in July, Trent Williams has maintained an elite level of play, earning his 12th Pro Bowl selection and second-team All-Pro recognition in 2025. He has expressed intentions to keep playing through age 40, which suggests that any new contract might extend through the 2026 and 2027 NFL seasons.

The 49ers face a financial dilemma should they consider parting ways with Williams, as cutting ties now would lead to $34.15 million in dead money against the cap while freeing only $4.69 million in cap space. This significant fiscal penalty adds to the motivation to secure Williams with a new contract rather than releasing or trading him.

“I think we’re on the right track and I know this, he’s been a tremendous asset to our organization,” Lynch affirmed. “We love having him. My hope, and I’ve shared this with Trent, is that his name’s up in there in the rafters with the greats that have played for the Niners because he certainly fits that category.”

Williams’ impact on the franchise is clear, reinforcing the organization’s desire to preserve his legacy as one of the most outstanding players in San Francisco history. His prior contract restructuring in 2024, which came after a 40-day holdout during training camp, underscores the complexity and high stakes surrounding his contracts, involving a three-year, $82.66 million deal with $48 million guaranteed.

Updates on Other Team Personnel and Contract Extensions

Besides the Williams negotiation, Lynch confirmed the return of Kwesi Adofo-Mensah to the 49ers’ personnel department. Adofo-Mensah brings prior experience with the team from 2013 to 2019 and most recently served as the general manager of the Minnesota Vikings.

The 49ers have also agreed to a contract extension with long snapper Jon Weeks. Additionally, they are working on a new agreement for kicker Eddy Pineiro but do not plan on applying the franchise tag on him, signaling a different approach in contract management for special teams personnel.
