Chargers’ Free Agency Focus: Boosting Herbert’s Offensive Weapons

The Los Angeles Chargers made a crucial change this offseason by replacing Greg Roman with Mike McDaniel as their offensive coordinator. This adjustment came after the Chargers managed to score only once across two playoff games under Roman, emphasizing the need for fresh offensive direction. McDaniel, formerly the Miami Dolphins‘ head coach for four years, is known for orchestrating dynamic offenses, positioning the Chargers to enhance their attack centered around quarterback Justin Herbert.

Mike McDaniel’s Proven Offensive Success and New Challenge

During McDaniel’s tenure in Miami, he worked closely with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who was drafted immediately before Herbert in 2020. McDaniel helped build a highly effective offense featuring elite playmakers like Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. However, unlike that Dolphins lineup, the Chargers currently lack a comparable game-changing offensive weapon, presenting a challenge for McDaniel as he adapts his scheme to Los Angeles.

Focus on Adding Versatile Running Backs and Tight Ends in Free Agency

According to Daniel Popper of The Athletic, the Chargers are expected to pursue upgrades at running back and tight end as free agency begins. Although Los Angeles selected Omarion Hampton with the 22nd overall pick last year, McDaniel’s system demands additional backfield options to diversify the offense. Popper anticipates that Kimani Vidal, an exclusive rights free agent who posted a career-high 779 scrimmage yards in 2025, will likely return.

Popper also mentioned potential targets, including a notable candidate for the running back position:

“One interesting name is the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Kenneth Gainwell, who finished fifth among running backs in receiving yards last season. Gainwell is a versatile receiving piece. He is not as dangerous or capable as a runner. But he would be an intriguing fit behind Hampton and within offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel’s scheme.”

Gainwell contributed 1,023 scrimmage yards last season, with 537 rushing yards and 486 receiving yards, scoring eight touchdowns and proving himself a true dual-threat option.

Tight End Upgrades to Prioritize Blocking and Athleticism

Regarding the tight end position, Popper highlighted the Chargers’ interest in players who excel in both blocking and athleticism to support their offense. He referenced the emergence of Oronde Gadsden II as a promising rookie and called attention to Charlie Kolar of the Ravens as a free agent who meets the Chargers’ criteria:

“As the Chargers look at tight ends in free agency, I think they will be prioritizing two traits: blocking and athleticism. The Ravens’ Charlie Kolar is one player who fits this mold.”

Financial Flexibility Positions Chargers for Active Offseason Moves

The Chargers approach free agency with approximately $85 million in salary cap space, giving them substantial flexibility to pursue impactful additions. Given the emphasis on improving their offense, many eyes will be on these moves as the team aims to provide Justin Herbert with the talent necessary to elevate the Chargers’ attack in the upcoming season.
