Lance McCutcheon, former Montana State wide receiver and Bozeman native, revealed his decision to retire from football on Tuesday via Instagram. His retirement announcement marks the conclusion of a four-year NFL career that began in 2022 and included multiple team engagements.
Career Progression Across Several NFL Teams
McCutcheon started his professional journey when he earned a spot on the Los Angeles Rams’ 53-man roster in 2022 following a standout preseason performance. After being waived by the Rams ahead of the 2023 season, he joined the Houston Texans’ practice squad. Later that fall, the New York Jets signed him to their practice squad but released him before the 2024 season began. McCutcheon’s time in the NFL also involved several stints with the Pittsburgh Steelers, including multiple signings and releases within a short span. His last professional engagement was with the Tennessee Titans during the previous fall, where he experienced similar back-and-forth roster moves.
Gratitude and Reflections on an NFL Journey
Expressing his heartfelt thanks, McCutcheon wrote,
“The list of thanks that are owed is never ending, so THANK YOU to everyone out there that helped me accomplish my dream of playing in the NFL,”
and continued,
“Thank you to all the teams, coaches, and staff that believed in me and gave me this opportunity! I am more than grateful for my time in the league and I couldn’t be more blessed and appreciative of this journey.”
He also reflected on his experience with several franchises, stating,
“4 years and 5 teams is more than I could ever ask for,”
and,
“For a kid from Bozeman, MT to get to live in these cities and play and represent each of these teams, it was truly a dream come true.”
College Achievements and Legacy
McCutcheon graduated from Bozeman High School in 2017 before moving on to Montana State University for five seasons. His senior year was particularly notable when he earned first-team All-Big Sky Conference honors and set an MSU record with 1,219 receiving yards. He also played a key role in helping the Bobcats reach the FCS championship game during that season.
Significance of McCutcheon’s Retirement Announcement
McCutcheon’s retirement announcement highlights the challenges and resilience required to carve out a professional football career as an undrafted player. Representing his hometown and alma mater, his journey through multiple NFL organizations demonstrates both the competitive nature of the league and the opportunities it offers players from smaller markets like Bozeman, Montana. Fans and followers will now watch to see how McCutcheon transitions into life beyond the NFL, carrying forward the passion and determination that defined his career.
