Tyler Higbee Signs 2-Year Extension with Rams

Tyler Higbee, a seasoned tight end with 11 years in the league, has agreed to a fresh two-year, $8 million contract extension with the Los Angeles Rams, ensuring his continued presence on the team where he began his career. This extension marks his first time entering free agency, as he has exclusively played for the Rams since being selected as a fourth-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Career Progression and Key Contributions

Higbee started his rookie year as the third tight end behind veterans Lance Kendricks and Cory Harkey under then-head coach Jeff Fisher, appearing in 16 games with seven starts and recording 11 catches for 85 yards and one touchdown. Despite the team’s struggles, finishing 4-12 and missing the playoffs, Higbee laid the groundwork for future growth.

With the arrival of Sean McVay as head coach in 2017, Higbee was promoted to starting tight end. That season, he logged 25 receptions, 298 yards, and one touchdown over 16 starts, contributing to the Rams’ playoff berth. Although the postseason ended with a Wild-Card loss to the Atlanta Falcons, Higbee made his first playoff start.

The Rams’ offense surged following the acquisition of quarterback Matthew Stafford, traded for Jared Goff. In 2021, Higbee had a breakthrough campaign, starting 15 games and posting 61 receptions for 560 yards along with five touchdowns. Through his career, he became the franchise’s all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards among tight ends. Despite missing the Super Bowl victory over the Cincinnati Bengals due to a knee injury, Higbee earned a championship ring.

Challenges and Recent Developments

Following a significant knee injury that included torn ACL and MCL ligaments, Higbee’s role shifted during the 2024 and 2025 seasons. The emergence of rookie tight end Colby Parkinson reduced Higbee’s playing time, as Parkinson secured the starting tight end position. In the 2025 season, Higbee played in fewer games and recorded 25 receptions for 281 yards and three touchdowns, but remained a key contributor to the Rams’ NFC Championship run, which ended with a loss to the Seattle Seahawks led by Sam Darnold and defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald.

Legacy and Future Outlook

Since entering the NFL, Higbee has amassed 386 receptions, 3,949 yards, and 27 touchdowns, all with the Rams. This new contract extension reflects the organization’s confidence in his abilities and leadership despite recent setbacks. As the Rams prepare for upcoming seasons, Higbee’s experience and resilience will be essential for maintaining stability amid evolving team dynamics.
