The Miami Dolphins have announced the release of fullback Alec Ingold and placekicker Jason Sanders, marking a significant roster change. This decision, reported by NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo and ESPN’s Adam Schefter, comes after contract negotiations with both players failed to reach an agreement.
Details on Alec Ingold’s Departure and Contract History
Alec Ingold, 29, originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2019 when he signed with the Raiders on a three-year deal valued at $1.765 million. After the Raiders declined to tender him in 2022, the Dolphins signed him to a two-year contract worth up to $7.5 million. He later extended his time in Miami with a three-year deal before the 2023 season.
Last season, Ingold played in all 17 games, rushing twice for nine yards and catching eight passes for 52 yards. Releasing him before June 1st is projected to save the Dolphins approximately $3.06 million against the salary cap.
Jason Sanders’ Career and Recent Performance in Miami
Jason Sanders, 30, was drafted in the seventh round by the Dolphins in 2018 and had been with the team since. He signed a five-year, $22 million contract extension in 2021. In 2024, Sanders appeared in every game and successfully made 37 out of 41 field goal attempts, achieving a 90.2% success rate, along with 26 of 28 extra points.
According to Over The Cap, releasing Sanders before June 1st will provide Miami with an additional cap savings of $3.9 million. Efforts to renegotiate his contract were unsuccessful, prompting the Dolphins’ decision to move on without him.
Financial Implications and Team Strategy Moving Forward
Both releases reflect Miami’s approach to managing salary cap space and reshaping their roster ahead of the upcoming season. The combined savings from these moves, totaling almost $7 million, give the Dolphins more flexibility as free agency and the draft approach. This may indicate a shift toward acquiring new talent or re-allocating resources in key positions.
“The Dolphins are parting ways with FB Alec Ingold, and he will be released as soon as Friday.” ?Mike Garafolo, NFL Network
“Miami also tried to get a new deal done with Sanders, but will release him after failing to find a common ground.” ?Adam Schefter, ESPN
As a roster reshuffle looms, the Dolphins’ choices will be closely watched by NFL insiders and fans alike, eager to see how these moves influence Miami’s competitiveness in the season ahead.
