Ryan Kelly, the former Alabama center, officially announced his retirement from the NFL on Friday, closing out a remarkable 10-year professional journey. Known for his leadership and skill, Kelly’s retirement marks the conclusion of a significant chapter in both his life and the league.
The announcement came just after a season with the Minnesota Vikings, following a long stint with the Indianapolis Colts, where Kelly established himself as one of the premier centers in the game.
Kelly’s NFL and College Achievements
Kelly, now 32, entered the NFL as the 18th overall pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 2016 after a standout collegiate career at Alabama. He spent nine seasons with the Colts, earning four Pro Bowl selections from 2019 to 2022 and again in 2024. In addition, he was named second-team All-Pro in 2020, highlighting his impact at the professional level.
After becoming a free agent at the end of the 2024 season, Kelly signed with the Minnesota Vikings for his final year before retiring.
Before reaching the NFL, Kelly experienced significant success with Alabama. He was a key contributor to three national championship-winning teams between 2011 and 2015. Initially redshirting in 2011 and serving as a backup in 2012 behind Barrett Jones, Kelly took over as the starting center in 2013. He started for three seasons, culminating in winning the prestigious Rimington Trophy and earning consensus All-American honors in his senior year of 2015, along with the SEC Jacobs Blocking Trophy. His senior year also brought Alabama another national title.

Kelly’s Reflections on His Career
Upon announcing his retirement on social media, Ryan Kelly reflected on his decade in the league:
“10 seasons. What an incredible ride it was,” Ryan Kelly, NFL Center
“I was blessed to be around some of the greatest people this sport has to offer. I always wanted to leave each place better than how I found it and with that I can hang my hat. Forever grateful for my family and brothers! Cheers,” Ryan Kelly, NFL Center
Connection to Alabama Football and Legacy
Kelly’s retirement this offseason follows that of fellow Alabama offensive lineman Bradley Bozeman, who notably took over Kelly’s role as the Crimson Tide’s starting center in 2016. Both have left a lasting mark on the Alabama program and in the NFL as linemen known for their toughness and consistency.
Kelly’s career is a testament to determination and excellence at every level, from his collegiate achievements in Tuscaloosa to his solid NFL tenure with two teams.
Looking Ahead Beyond Football
As Ryan Kelly steps away from professional football, his influence in the center position and leadership within locker rooms will be remembered by teammates and fans alike. His commitment to leaving every situation improved reflects a mindset that could lend itself to future roles in coaching, mentoring, or other sports-related endeavors.
Given Kelly’s stature and experience, many will watch closely to see how he utilizes his knowledge and leadership off the field in the coming years.
