With free agents like Trey Hendrickson, Boye Mafe, and Odafe Oweh as potential options, Dallas is exploring multiple avenues to bolster their defense. One notable possibility involves engaging the Pittsburgh Steelers in trade discussions focused on linebacker Nick Herbig.
Proposed Trade Details Involving Herbig and Draft Picks
Brian Martin of Cowboys Wire has proposed a trade where the Cowboys would receive Nick Herbig along with the 21st overall pick, while the Steelers would move up to pick No. 12 in the first round. Martin highlighted Herbig as a compelling target, saying,
“Forget about signing Trey Hendrickson now that Maxx Crosby has been traded, the pass rusher the Cowboys should be targeting is Pittsburgh Steelers OLB Nick Herbig. He’s only 24 years old and entering the final year of his rookie contract,”
underscoring Herbig’s youth and contract status.
Martin further explained the Steelers’ position, noting,
“The Steelers are already heavily invested in T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith, making it unlikely they will offer Herbig a contract extension. Swapping first-round draft picks is equivalent to a mid second-round draft pick this year. This trade gives Dallas a starting caliber OLB who fits Parker’s scheme and immediately upgrades the defense.”
Nick Herbig, a fourth-round selection out of Wisconsin in 2023, has proven himself as an effective rotational pass rusher for Pittsburgh. Last season, he amassed 30 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, and one interception. His experience operating within a 3-4 defensive scheme aligns well with the system employed by Christian Parker in Dallas.
Potential Challenges Related to Contract Negotiations
Acquiring Herbig carries one notable concern: contract negotiations. Both Herbig and recent trade acquisition George Pickens share a similar situation, as they are each entering the final year of their rookie deals. Pickens, who was also acquired from Pittsburgh, had a breakout season with 93 receptions, 1,429 yards, and nine touchdowns, leading to a franchise tag worth $28.1 million due to delayed contract extension talks.
Herbig has shown steady improvement every year and possesses the potential to emerge as a key defensive player.
