Cowboys Land Rashan Gary in Trade with Packers for 2027 Pick

The Dallas Cowboys have strengthened their defense by acquiring Rashan Gary from the Green Bay Packers in a trade reported on Monday by NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero. The Cowboys are trading a 2027 fourth-round pick to bring in the former first-round selection, adding depth to their pass rush.

Details of the Trade and Gary’s Tenure in Green Bay

Gary, originally chosen 12th overall in the 2019 NFL Draft, spent seven seasons with the Packers before this move. Late last week, he shared a farewell message on social media, which has since been deleted. Unlike a release, Green Bay packaged a late draft pick in the deal, saving $10.98 million on their salary cap, despite carrying $17 million in dead money. During his time with the Packers, Gary recorded 46.5 sacks but never reached double-digit sacks in a season. He earned a Pro Bowl selection in 2024, though his production declined significantly thereafter, finishing 2025 with 7.5 sacks, all amassed before Week 9.

Familiar Faces and Defensive Needs Addressed

The Cowboys’ new defensive coordinator, Christian Parker, has a prior connection to Gary as he was part of the Packers’ coaching staff during Gary’s first two seasons. This trade also reunites Gary with defensive tackle Kenny Clark in Dallas. At 28 years old, Gary is expected to fill the void left by veteran pass rushers Jadeveon Clowney and Dante Fowler, who have entered free agency. In addition to pass-rushing skills, Gary brings solid run defense, providing the Cowboys’ overhauled defense with valuable versatility.

Financial and Strategic Implications

Although Dallas will assume Gary’s salary, his contract remains reasonable compared to the current market for pass rushers. Trading a future Day 3 draft pick for a player of his caliber is seen as a sensible move to address a significant defensive weakness. Still, the Cowboys are likely to continue making adjustments to bolster their defense at multiple levels moving forward.
