Rico Dowdle Signs with Steelers After 1,000-Yard Season

Six-year NFL veteran running back Rico Dowdle has signed a contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers after showcasing his abilities in the 2025 season. Known for his rising profile and resilience, Dowdle’s move comes after a 1,000-yard rushing campaign that demonstrated his value as a reliable offensive weapon.

Progression from Undrafted Free Agent to Starting Running Back

Rico Dowdle began his professional career as an undrafted free agent, initially signed by the Dallas Cowboys. Early in his career, the South Carolina product contributed mostly on special teams with limited carries—registering just seven attempts and 24 yards over his first three seasons. His breakthrough came in 2023, when he took on a backup role behind veteran Tony Pollard and accumulated 361 rushing yards and two touchdowns across 89 carries.

Establishing Himself as a Starter with Dallas and Carolina

After Pollard’s departure to the Tennessee Titans in 2024, Dowdle stepped into the lead back role for the Cowboys. Despite limited prior starting experience, he responded well by rushing for 1,079 yards and scoring two touchdowns in 16 games, while also contributing 39 receptions for 249 yards and three receiving touchdowns. However, the Cowboys’ overall struggles led to a 7-10 record and the firing of head coach Mike McCarthy.

In 2025, Dowdle signed a one-year contract with the Carolina Panthers as Chuba Hubbard’s primary backup. Quickly overtaking the starting position, he appeared in all 17 games, with 11 starts, and finished with 1,076 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 236 carries. He also added 39 receptions for 297 yards and one receiving touchdown. Dowdle’s efforts helped the Panthers capture the NFC South title before a narrow defeat by the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Wild Card Round.

Career Overview and Impact on Steelers’ Offense

Throughout his NFL tenure, Dowdle has accumulated 2,540 rushing yards and scored 10 rushing touchdowns on 567 carries, averaging 4.5 yards per carry. Additionally, he has caught 95 passes for 690 yards and six receiving touchdowns. His journey from undrafted free agent to a proven starter underscores his determination and versatility.

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ decision to bring Dowdle on board signals their intent to add depth and experience to their backfield. With his demonstrated ability to perform consistently, he offers potential stability and an offensive boost as the team looks to improve its ground game.
