Amid concerns over salary-cap pressures, the Philadelphia Eagles successfully renegotiated the contract of versatile defensive back Michael Carter II to keep him on the roster, according to a league insider. Carter, acquired last October from the New York Jets, remains a key figure in the Eagles’ defense as the team adjusts its financial commitments.
The Eagles obtained Carter in exchange for wide receiver John Metchie along with a swap of 2027 draft picks. Previously considered one of the league’s top slot cornerbacks, Carter was under a three-year, $30.75 million contract signed with the Jets in September 2024 before restructuring it with Philadelphia.
Key Role as a Backup in Eagles’ Defensive Scheme
Since joining the Eagles, Carter has contributed significantly as a reliable backup at both nickel cornerback and safety positions, which share similar responsibilities in head coach Vic Fangio’s defensive system. Although some speculated that Carter might enable All-Pro slot corner Cooper DeJean to shift outside opposite fellow All-Pro Quinyon Mitchell, Fangio has preferred to keep DeJean in the slot where he excels.
Contrary to mistaken reports, Carter was not released and re-signed; instead, he amended his contract to help the Eagles manage their salary cap without interruption to his tenure. Going forward, Carter is expected to continue backing up DeJean in the slot while potentially taking on a larger role in the secondary, especially given uncertainties surrounding unrestricted free agents Reed Blankenship and Marcus Epps.
Player Contributions and Team Prospects
Backup safety Drew Mukuba, a second-year player recovering from a fractured fibula, returns as another important piece in the Eagles’ defensive backfield. During eight games last season, Carter registered 10 tackles and played 106 defensive snaps, including participation in Philadelphia’s wild-card playoff loss to San Francisco.
