Bengals Secure Boye Mafe in $60M Contract to Boost Defense

The Cincinnati Bengals have agreed to three-year contracts with edge rusher Boye Mafe and safety Bryan Cook, aiming to strengthen their defensive roster ahead of the new NFL season. These deals, finalized ahead of the league year’s official start, are valued at $60 million for Mafe and $42.5 million for Cook, according to sources familiar with the negotiations.

Addressing Defensive Struggles While Offense Excels

After two seasons marked by defensive issues, Cincinnati prioritized upgrading its defense despite boasting a prolific offense led by quarterback Joe Burrow and All-Pro wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase. The Bengals’ defense ranked near the bottom of the league last year, particularly struggling against the run, finishing 31st overall. Their inability to contain opposing offenses contributed to several losses even when scoring 30 points or more.

Over the last two seasons, Cincinnati lost seven games in which they scored at least 30 points, becoming the first team in NFL history to drop at least three games in consecutive seasons while scoring 34 or more points.

Player Backgrounds and Defensive Expectations

Boye Mafe joins the Bengals after four seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, while Bryan Cook returns to his hometown of Cincinnati, having played at Mt. Healthy High School and the University of Cincinnati before his four years with the Kansas City Chiefs. Cook is expected to fill the void left by safety Jessie Bates III, who departed for the Atlanta Falcons in 2023.

Cook’s reputation for tackling reliability is a key asset; last season he missed just four tackles, a sharp contrast to the Bengals’ previous leader in missed tackles, Geno Stone, who recorded 27 misses. Overall, Cincinnati’s defense accumulated 171 missed tackles last season, the highest total recorded since the league began tracking this statistic in 2007.

Defensive Coordinator Hopes for Improved Pass Rush

Defensive coordinator Al Golden anticipates that Mafe will enhance the Bengals’ pass rush, which was among the league’s weakest in sacks last season. Although Mafe recorded only two sacks last year, his role within defensive schemes has evolved significantly over the past two seasons, suggesting untapped potential for increased impact.

Implications for Bengals Defense Moving Forward

These signings signal Cincinnati’s commitment to balancing their formidable offense with a more competitive defense. With the additions of Mafe and Cook, the Bengals aim to address critical weaknesses and improve their standing in the upcoming NFL season. The effectiveness of these contracts will be closely watched as the team seeks to transform its defense into a strength capable of complementing its high-scoring offense.
