The Detroit Lions gained two compensatory picks for the 2027 NFL Draft following the first day of free agency, as general manager Brad Holmes navigates the evolving formula that tallies these selections. The moves come amid several player departures and acquisitions, impacting the number of additional picks Detroit will receive.
Cornerback Amik Robertson’s decision to sign with the Washington Commanders is expected to earn the Lions a sixth-round pick in 2027. Similarly, defensive tackle Roy Lopez leaving the team should result in Detroit securing a seventh-round compensatory pick that same year.
Factors Influencing Compensatory Picks This Offseason
While linebacker Alex Anzalone signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Lions mitigated this loss by acquiring center Cade Mays from the Carolina Panthers, effectively neutralizing those changes in the compensatory pick calculation. In contrast, departures of quarterback Kyle Allen and offensive tackle Larry Borom did not count toward the formula, as they are categorized as non-qualifying compensatory free agents.
Throughout free agency, Detroit focused heavily on strengthening its offensive line, aiming to inject competition and depth into the unit for the upcoming seasons.
Emphasizing Competition on the Offensive Line
Offensive line coach and run game coordinator Hank Fraley highlighted the importance of competition within the group, pointing out that healthy rivalry among players drives improvement and exposes weaknesses. He explained,
“Competition brings out the best of a unit. It will weed out the weak, too, the guys that just can’t keep up. Talking with all our guys this year, there’s a lot of opportunity to compete.”
Fraley reflected on his own experience as a player, welcoming new teammates as a way to elevate the entire unit’s performance. He stated,
“It’s just, ‘Okay, I’m coming in and working hard and do what I can do and take care of what I can take care of.’ It’s only normally going to make you a better player. It’s going to make those other guys around you better. We’re going to breed competition, and I think you’re going to see the best from all these young men moving forward.”
Context of Previous Compensatory Picks and Future Outlook
Last year, Detroit managed to secure one compensatory pick in the fifth round, number 181 overall. This season’s gain of two extra compensatory selections in later rounds adds valuable opportunities for the Lions to develop talent and address roster needs without sacrificing earlier draft assets.
As the 2027 draft approaches, these compensatory picks offer Detroit flexibility to continue rebuilding and enhancing the team’s competitiveness. The coaching staff’s emphasis on fostering competition among players aims to maximize the potential value these picks can provide.
