Roy Lopez is heading back to the Arizona Cardinals after completing a solid campaign with the Detroit Lions. The 28-year-old defensive tackle has signed a two-year contract reportedly worth $11.5 million, with $7 million guaranteed, returning to the team where his professional career began.
Lopez played in every game last season for Detroit, primarily contributing as a reserve. His impact was noticeable through two sacks, four tackles for loss, and five quarterback hits, while also effectively slowing opponents’ rushing attacks. His performance was particularly strong in stopping Philadelphia’s “tush push” tactic and he maintained a steady role despite competition from emerging and veteran defenders.
Strong Defensive Presence and Fit Within Lions’ Lineup
Lopez’s contributions extended beyond the stat sheet; he was the highest-graded defender for the Lions in Weeks 8 and 10. Even with Alim McNeill’s return and the addition of first-round draft pick Tyleik Williams, as well as veteran DJ Reader’s presence, Lopez kept a consistent role in Detroit’s defensive rotation. However, his future with the Lions was uncertain given the team’s evolving defensive line composition.
At his introductory press conference in Detroit last year, Lopez shared about his departure from Arizona, saying,
I’m not going to lie, it was tough,
and added,
It was something that, when I said I’ve got a big, loving family, I mean it when I say they’re fully 100% supportive and understand that this is my career.

Lopez’s Roots and Community Engagement in Arizona
Lopez is a native of Tempe, Arizona, and completed his college football career at the University of Arizona. Before his time with Detroit, he had spent two seasons with the Cardinals, including starting a career-high 16 games in 2024. Beyond football, Lopez and his family run a foundation that hosts multiple events in Arizona annually, including a camp in Tempe each offseason, reinforcing his connection to the community.
Implications of Lopez’s Departure for the Detroit Lions Defense
While Lopez’s exit is not unexpected, it creates a noticeable gap on the Lions’ defensive front. Detroit currently relies on McNeill and Williams as lead interior defenders, with Mekhi Wingo, Chris Smith, and Levi Onwuzurike also on the roster. Wingo, a former sixth-round pick, appeared in just two games last season, while Smith has fluctuated between the practice squad and active roster. Onwuzurike has shown promise but has struggled with injuries over the last several years.
Lopez consistently played double-digit snaps every game last year and logged more than 20 snaps in each of the final eight contests. His departure means Detroit needs to bolster its defensive depth, especially since DJ Reader’s status as a free agent remains unresolved. This offseason will be pivotal for the Lions to address interior defensive line depth to maintain their competitiveness.
