However, his performance metrics were average, with Pro Football Focus (PFF) ranking him 100th out of 134 defensive linemen, particularly struggling against the run. Wooden recorded 11 total pressures, consisting of eight hurries and three quarterback hits, along with 34 tackles and 27 run stops over 295 run-defense snaps.
In contrast, A’Shawn Robinson, despite being 30 years old, maintained a solid performance level with a PFF grade of 65.5, ranking 42nd among defensive linemen. Last season, Robinson logged 658 snaps and excelled in run defense, ranking 33rd with a grade of 62.5. He generated 31 total pressures, including 22 hurries, six QB hits, and three sacks. Additionally, he contributed 45 solo tackles, 34 run stops, and deflected three passes in 308 run-defense snaps.
Robinson’s Release From Panthers Opens Opportunity for Packers
The Panthers had signed Robinson to a three-year, $22.5 million contract, but he was cut amid a significant salary cap reshuffling during the free-agency tampering period. Carolina’s extensive investment in rebuilding its defensive front rendered Robinson expendable. This unexpected availability presents a timely chance for Green Bay to add experience to its defensive line without overspending.
Though not a star player, Robinson offers a valuable upgrade opportunity. His ability to fill a rotational or starting role makes him a versatile target, and he is expected to command a salary comparable to his last contract. This aligns well with the Packers’ strategic needs following Wooden’s departure.
Transitioning to a New Defensive Scheme Under Jonathan Gannon
The Packers will enter the new season with defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon at the helm, marking a shift from Jeff Hafley’s two-year tenure. With the offense already showing promise, there is increased pressure to strengthen the defense. Adding a seasoned defender like Robinson could help meet the heightened expectations and smooth the transition into Gannon’s system.
