Kaden Elliss Returns to Saints on 3-Year $33M Deal

The New Orleans Saints have re-signed linebacker Kaden Elliss on a three-year contract worth $33 million, including $23 million guaranteed, with a maximum value approaching $39 million. This move, confirmed through reports by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and other local sources, marks Elliss’ return to the organization that drafted him in 2019.

Elliss’ Journey from Draft Pick to Defensive Leader

Originally selected in the seventh round (244th overall) out of Idaho, Elliss played his first four NFL seasons for the Saints. He evolved from a backup into a key defensive contributor, notably issuing a standout performance in 2022 with 78 tackles and seven sacks across 11 starts. After that breakout year, he departed New Orleans in free agency.

In 2023, Elliss signed a three-year, $21.5 million contract with the Atlanta Falcons, a division rival in the NFC South. During his time in Atlanta, he quickly became a defensive pillar, starting every game over three seasons and leading the team in tackles multiple times. Statistical sources like Pro Football Focus highlighted his strong pass-rush and coverage skills, totaling over 380 tackles and 12.5 sacks over that period.

Recent Performance and Recognition

In the 2025 season, Elliss recorded 107 tackles (59 solo), 3.5 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, six passes defensed including an interception, and forced one fumble over 17 games. Although a decline from a peak year in 2024 with 151 tackles and six sacks, he maintained his versatility as an off-ball linebacker able to play both on the line and in coverage. Former Falcons defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich praised Elliss’ value, stating replacing him

would take more than one human being.

Saints Address Linebacker Needs with Elliss’ Return

This signing comes amid questions about veteran Demario Davis’ future and adjustments in linebacker roles, including that of Pete Werner. Now 31 years old, Elliss is expected to start immediately, bringing leadership, tackling consistency, and pass-rush ability to a defense aiming to improve its performance.

Impact on NFC South and Team Dynamics

Elliss’ return adds a complicated dimension to the NFC South rivalry, as he rejoins the Saints after excelling with their divisional opponent, the Falcons. His addition strengthens New Orleans’ defense while simultaneously removing a key piece from Atlanta’s lineup as the new league year begins.

Negotiations were led by Elliss’ agents, Malki Kawa and Ethan Lock of First Round Management. The deal awaits finalization pending a physical and an official announcement from the Saints organization.

Related Team Moves: Punter Trade and New Signing

Alongside Elliss’ return, the Saints also traded punter Kai Kroeger to the Houston Texans. Kroeger, an undrafted rookie from South Carolina, became the Saints’ starting punter during last year’s preseason. In exchange, New Orleans negotiated a swap of sixth- and seventh-round draft picks in 2028 with Houston.

The Saints promptly replaced Kroeger by signing former Minnesota Vikings punter Ryan Wright, further adjusting their special teams unit ahead of the upcoming season.
