The New Jersey Devils have experienced a notable downturn in performance after a promising start to the season. By the end of November, the team held a 16-8-1 record, but since then, they have fallen out of playoff contention with 58 points in 56 games, placing them near the bottom of the Metropolitan Division standings. The ongoing slump has intensified pressure on the team and its key players, including forward Jack Hughes.
Jack Hughes Responds to Fan Expectations During Youth Foundation Appearance
During an event hosted by the Devils Youth Foundation on Monday, Jack Hughes addressed the team’s disappointing stretch and fan expectations. In a candid moment captured on video, Hughes expressed frustration and admitted he had no message to offer the Devils’ fanbase, emphasizing that the responsibility to turn things around rests solely with the players.
“I honestly have nothing to say to them,” Hughes said. “Honestly, like for us, it’s just our group. We’ve got to figure out a way to win more hockey games and we got two big games here and before the break and after the break, it’s a long time sort of keep the league fresh and you’re up for a really good final 25 games, I think it is on us. It’s on us to find a way to make more. Like I said, that’s on us.”
Fan Reactions Split Over Hughes’ Comments
Hughes’ remarks sparked mixed reactions on social media platforms, particularly on X, where fans debated their meaning and tone. Some supporters criticized him for appearing dismissive toward the fanbase, while others defended his honesty and intent. The division highlighted the growing frustration among the Devils’ followers amid the team’s struggles.
“Oh man , I just lost a lot of respect & admiration for Jack….Future looks grim,” a fan wrote.
“It’s a s**t answer from an arrogant prick who can’t stay healthy. How about you actually do something instead of being constantly on f**king LTIR and being a douche to the media?” an angry fan said.
“Another tone deaf comment from the NHL’s “next gen”. Fans are the reason you play a game for a LIVING. But that doesn’t matter does it? Play for yourself and your “bag”. Guys like this don’t leave a legacy, they just leave,” a fan commented.
“It’s really annoying how this is taking off when he very clearly didn’t mean it how it’s being presented in these posts,” a fan came to Hughes’ support.
“Why did he get fried for this it’s a fine answer,” a fan stated.
Recent Defeats and Jack Hughes’ Injury Status
The Devils suffered another setback on Tuesday, losing 3-0 at home against the Columbus Blue Jackets at the Prudential Center. This marked the team’s second consecutive loss following a narrow 3-2 overtime win over the Nashville Predators on January 29. During the game against Columbus, Jack Hughes sustained a lower-body injury, which caused him to miss the subsequent 4-1 defeat to the Ottawa Senators on Saturday.

Despite the injury, Hughes participated lightly in practice and took individual shots on goal on Tuesday morning. Head coach Sheldon Keefe expressed cautious optimism about Hughes’ potential return for Thursday’s game against the New York Islanders, just before the Olympic break.
“It’s just a level of strength and obviously pain subsiding but it’s more so the strength and to be able to have the necessary reinforcement that you need to play in an NHL game,” Keefe said on Tuesday morning.
“His goal is to play on Thursday (against the New York Islanders) and he’s trying to do everything that he can to get to that point, but it’s really up to the medical team. They’re not confident with where he’s at but we’ll just see what [Wednesday] brings.”
Jack Hughes’ Contribution Despite Challenges
Jack Hughes has been a significant offensive contributor this season, scoring 36 points in 36 games. This already matches his point total from the previous two seasons combined, during which he missed over 20 games due to injuries. Over those two years, he accumulated 144 points in 124 games, demonstrating his potential impact when healthy.
The Devils’ current slump, combined with Hughes’ injury concerns, adds uncertainty to the team’s playoff hopes and challenges their ability to regain momentum heading into the final 25 games of the regular season. How Hughes and the Devils respond in the coming weeks will be critical for their success and for satisfying a fanbase eager for better results.
